Fuel Quality

Hi

Has anyone noticed any performance differences in the different fuel brands sold?

I'm not sure if this is garage specific, but I've been noticing some difference, between the garages which are close to home and work.

I usually fill up at Caltex (on the highway), and top up at Total close to home. The other day, the Caltex on the highway was closed for renovations, gosh I nearly ran out of gas. So I put a full tank of Shell, I'm very surprised as the car seems to be performing better with Shell. I do have another Shell garage
close to home, but the petrol doesn't seem to deliver the same results, mind you I never fill up at this garage as its always to busy.

I'm also going to see what KMs I get out of the full tank of Shell vs Calltex.

Do garages mix fuel 93 and 95?

I honestly think it is garage specific and how clean the fuel reserves are. The general brand differences I don’t think we would/should notice easily if staying on the same RON rating.

I know I have have used a Shell twice in Edenvale area and the car’s performance seemed lackluster but the Shell on the N1 Midrand always seems better. Same goes for Sasol and etc. I generally fill up at an Engen in Lonehill and BP in Kyalami and the car seems to run better.

Different fuels offer a different blend of performance and economy.. From my experience, Engen gives better mileage but doesn't offer the same performance as Shell (butt dyno).

I've always only stuck to Shell in my cars..

I noticed the difference in performance/economy aswell.

This is how I rate the different brands, from my experience using them.

Shell- excellent performance but poor mileage
Bp- excellent mileage but I notice a slight drop in performance
Engen- Sort of a balance between shell and BP. Good performance and better mileage than shell

I use caltex every now and then because of their cleaning additives. But it burns quick.

I done my own small test and found out that shell is the best with regards to performance and mileage. Since then ive always only used shell

My car only runs on engen, but on the few occasions i bomb shell(2 or 3 tanks) and my butt dyno tells me shell works.

I dont notice a difference in terms of performance but I think Total for me usually gives me pretty good mileage

I find the same with Total , get more mileage than all the other brands . Was the same with the mini , at least 80-100km more . Shell & Caltex seem to burn way to quick in my car and Engen & BP are the same. I tried to always fill up with Total/ Only thing is there aren't to many . I have one close to my work

The opinions posted here of what fuel is better quality is too random to determine for sure.

Thanks for the link above but it doesn’t answer much either. The article will be biased in favor of Sasol plus that was over 4 years ago. Fuel recipes have definitely changed since then.

I suppose the only answer we can get from here is to keep trying different fuels.

Here is a chart of efficiency by brand with my 335i (all 95 RON). I don’t have enough points yet to determine proper average and my car has had issues.

The different points represent the efficiency after fill up. The lines connecting only similar pints only there to show the difference easier and aren’t representative of the kilometers on the x-axis.

Also only use shell, but here in Mosselbay we have a total close by.

I do think the problem might not be solely with the fuel itself but with the actual physical garage where you go. See in my mind it makes sense that the most used garage, ie always busy one, will have cleaner tanks, pump, pump station nozzle etc as it is so frequently used that there is no build up of gunk or any particles to settle at the bottom of the garage fuel reserve tank.

So look for the busy garage of your choice, mine at the moment is the total close to me as it is the only one in Dana bay :roflol:

I concur with all of the above - glad I'm not imagining things when filling up at these garages and "taking note" of how each fuel delivers.
