Fuel Indicator on E46

Hi Guys,

I need some help. I got stuck twice now with my car. Once the car goes to reserve it just stops after a while.

Yesturday it said 100km remaining and it just died and had to file petrol out of a bottle to get to the next garage.

The guy that checked my car says its comman on a BMW after a certain age. The level thingy has to be re set as it goes off. So in actual fact the car was dry empty.

Anyone know where i can take it to get fixed? The car might have a new owner soon so i dont want to give it to him with something wrong...

Any help guys. Thanks

Your "level thingy" needs to be replaced - the one in the tank on the drivers side. (or it might just be jammed)

At the moment my e60 guage wont go to full even with a full tank - so I need to check the one on the passenger side.

Its quite common

Dude, it's a bad habit to drive up to empty.
I usually just check my trip meter and when it get's close to 500 I fill-up and reset it.

Happened twice on our E36. The problem is the electrical wire to the float sensor gets hard and bends with the float sensor moving up and down with the petrol level, causing it to either comes loose or break off. The last time I soldered an extra piece of wire in so it has more play and doesn't bend close to the soldering point. If you have any soldering skills its an easy DIY.
