Fuel consumption

Calling all e34 540i drivers.

Just a quick question. My on board computer is currently sitting on 17.5l/100km.

This is town driving only. Up and down Durbanroad between home and office, in peak hour traffic. (Plenty of stop/start)

It works out to about 5.7km/ litre.

Too heavy? Sounds about right? What do you guys think?

You're lucky, mine is sitting at 19.5L/100km. No highway driving. I do think this is because i tend to drive like an ass most of the time. :mmm:

I drive her very, VERY relaxed. I should see at least 23l/100km if I start hammering her.

Jandre the 540 is a strange beast where gentle driving makes very little difference to the fuel cons.

Drive it slightly enthusiasticly and it will use less fuel, the most efficient range of the engine is above 2000rpm and peaks at 4000rpm which is where it makes the most power for the fuel it burns.

I get 13.5 driving between work and home, 33km which is about 12km highway and 21km city (peak traffic).

But I drive a e39 540.

ye, '98/09+ E39's fuel consumption is allot better than the E34 540

I can get mine very low if I drive really responsible

Refilled my tank this morning,I get 6.6km/l....not as good as I thought. But is due to peak traffic and city driving.

I have to get my cats removed and the ecu flashed, and maybe even consider replacing the auto gearbox with a manual one.

But for a 4.4l V8 the consumption is still quite good compared to other V8's and even V6's.

I just came back from a business trip to Hermanus, Kleinbaai, Gansbaai and those areas.
First time I took my528i on a road trip.
Still lot of the driving in the little towns from client to client.

Nice to have the power to pass in short space safely.

Average speed on the open road around 110km/h (speed limit max at 100km/h mostly)

Did about 350km's so far. 11.0 L/100km. I am sure I would be able to get 10 if I'd take her on a longer trip.

The best of the drive I enjoyed was taking a very sharp bend or two at 110km/h where the traffic sign reccomends 60-70km/h and this vehicle just sits around the corner very comfortably.

I did not enjoy night driving though. It seems my headlights are very low and not of major use at all.

Happy Beeming!!

Could never get better than 20l/100km in town lately.
Someone suggested trying some fuel injector/fuel system cleaner.
Bought Wynns fuel system cleaner and added to about 3/4 tank.
Experienced some smoking etc after that.
Had diagnostics done picked up code 202 Lambdasensor bank 1 fault.

Did a lot of research on net and wonder if decat could be good thing to do now as well?

What to look for on the E39 and what about the sensors? Can the cats be removed without problems?

Mine does highway (90km) each day, and I am getting 13l/100, and I dont really pay too much attention to economy, just heat up time. Have gotten below that as well.

SHe does not do much town driving at all except on Malibongwe drive.

My E34 - 540i Auto gets between 5.7km/l to 6.7km/l driving to work and back, mixture of “town” driving and highway –
The E34 - 525i Manual gets 9km/l – so I drive her during the week and the 540 on Fridays and the Weekend
The 525i seems to get more km’s per tank in my dad’s hand – smoother driver
Long trips the 525i gets down to 8.4.l per 100 and the 540 around 9.8l/100 but is more fun to drive
My dad’s E24 - 635csi is heavy in town 15l per 100 and gets down to 8.4l per 100 on long trips if you keep her under 140km/h – nice long gearing in the 5 speed auto-box
Mom’s E34 -535i: just drinks petrol and that is that.
As for the family tank – 753i – 400km per 100 litres - no further comment is needed,
So we looking for a nice E36 318 or E46 320 – I will not drive a small Jap eco-box
