Hmmm and do you do the same kms and drive the same route with ur E46? Has your driving style changed from the polo to the Bmw?

Its like my Fiance's Corsa 130i gets about 15l/100km... so she gets about 300Km a tank.. I get almost double.. but my tank is not double her size, my car is bigger, my engine is bigger, etc... Not all cars are economical

If you compare the Audi 1.9tdi to a 320d of the same year (real world not paper specs) you will see a phenomenal gap in consumption. My grandfather has the wagon and runs at 5l / 100km combine cycle and my brother owned 2 Sedan A4 TDi`s and did 6.5l / 100km combined cycle and he drives like a doos.

Compare a 320i of similar year to a 2.0lt vw or other brand (no surprises there)

Compare an E36 328i to a Merc W202 series C280. I have owned both and the merc is far lighter than the beemer.

I know the performance andd spec levels are not the same between the two but if you are after economy a BM is not your best option.

I would put a match in the gas tank dude!

Corsa 130i using that much juice is just mad. My fiance`s Fiat palio 1.6i uses 10.5l / 100km with 100% town driving, and at least that thing has 100 horse power and goes like a stabbed rat.

the bmw weighs more than the polo, is older and has a smaller engine...

im not sure if its my driving style, but the bm is way better than the polo...

and you dont hear people complaining that the polo is generally heavy on fuel...

Let's put this into perspective shall we.

Could somebody please lend this guy an E34 540i automatic for a week.

He will never complain again about the fuel consumption of any car, truck, or boat or plane after that.

My friend had a 1.4 it wasnt that bad...
My wife has a 1.6 2010 6R and its nothing compared to that.

Did you polo have 17"/18" mags?
Did you have sound?
was it stock?

Though I have to say that Beemers are just thirsty compared to other Germans

that's a relief.

These diesel engines are "performance" diesel engines, so they can be extremely light on fuel when driven so. But when you put your foot down they will use as much fuel as they can efficiently burn to produce the required power! A Polo is a fair bit smaller and lighter than a BMW, so have to compare apples with apples. I remember being in an Audi A6 3.0TDI Quattro a few years ago and being amazed at how it varied in consumption based on how it was being driven - same thing with an Audi Q7 with the same engine. Okay, both bigger cars compared to a 320d, but puts things into perspective!

Nothing wrong with your car's consumption!

Used to get about 13l/100km out of my 130i corsa with 100% in town driving, same route in my 330i gave me 12l/100km, thing is with the corsa it would get the same consumption whether I drove conservatively or up to the redline every all the time, now doing that in the 330i it is almost like I can see the fuel gauge going down :) but with the 330i driving conservatively you are still going faster that driving the corsa up the the redline all the time

In terms of a long distance cruiser the 330i is in a totally different league, on a trip down to durban my consumption was 6.8 l/100km :dropjaw: for 3l 6-cyl petrol engine that is just epic.

In terms of the polo and 320d, as has been stated the weight and also what the intention of the engine was plays a huge role, just think how much more you are getting with the BMW compared to the polo for not a really big increase in consumption.

Hmmm nice story!

This morning I travelled from Paulshof to Vereeniging and hmmm I was impressed with the consumption, though I was travelling @ 120km/h using Cruise Control :joy:... nice feature...my polo didn't have it :(

Well all in all, I think I'll get used to the consumption.
Though I've noticed that driving in town with the Auto box isn't AYOBA, either than that... pa da pa pa da...I'm Loving it!!!

Thank you all for your input on this.
Thank you!

I wish i could get that out of a tank..

But i reckon 560km on a tank is close enough to 10l/100km :biglol:

Jip listen to what Rick says, on our 540i manual in town you get around 24l/100km when driving a bit faster than normal. That is about 380km from a 90liter tank :biglol::biglol:

i get the same feeling from my 120d (manual 6spd)...

this last tank is currently on 9.6l/100km. i reset at every tank refill. i reckon thats waaay too heavy for a little car with a turbodiesel.

a buddy of mine has a golf I 1.9tdi, he says even if he tries he cant get it over 6l/100km. having said that, my bmw is waaay faster.

freeway driving i've had it down to 5.5l/100km.

so who knows - its fine on freeways, it seems heavy on town traffic.

again - having said that - the last time i filled up was 3 weeks ago, and i still have a quarter tank left. ok ok, i havent used it much this week at all :thumbdo:

my birthday's coming up soon - i reckon i'll ask the wife for a "chip":thumbs::thumbs:
