Fuel consumption on a 320i 2001 model

My wife's 320i will run on the open road at 7.7l/100km but in town it is on 14-15l/100km. I am use to my 330d that is good even in town but is'nt 14 a bit heavy for a 320. The car also seems a bit lazy below 4000 RPM. Was serviced in April this year.

Seems heavy. The gopher, (318 A/T) i get open and traffic 9.5 /10. Depends on How happy i get with my right foor. Could be how she drives in traffic???

My wife have 2 positions on the accelerator. None and all the way to the floor. :)

My 2003 model liked to ref. Wanted to ref. I got around 8.5 km/litre in town. If you wanted that car to move, you needed to get it over 4000 rpm.

What seems strange is, even when you drive light feet, the consumption needle is almost always near 20 on the gauge.

sounds like carbon on the valves! go to midas and get a bottle of REDEX octane booster, and go wack it on the freeway for about 20km.. very common problem if i car never sees flat foot accelerating..

redex is not to up the performance but it also cleans valves very good!

is that 320i a 6 Cyl?
That consumption seems normal to me..
Comparing to my 1992 E36 316i(1.8L 4cyl), 2000 E46 318i(1.9L 4cyl), 2004 E46 318i(2L 4cyl), & 2006 E60 525i(2.5l 6Cyl).

On the sluggish point I have no idea, try the REDEX & see

In my 2000 e46 2.3 I get about 15l /100 km, gets down to about 7-8 on the open road.

Do engine cleaners actually work?

Thanks a lot all of you. Seems that the FC is within limits. I am however concern that the power on low RPM is a bit down. Power delivery between 5000 and 6000 RPM is very good.

i dont touch engine cleaners, do how ever use a bottle of injector cleaner every 30 000kms.. but on all lazy driven cars since back in the day i just flip in a bottle of redex octane booster and open up for about 20km it removes all the carbon on the valves, ive tested it with a cylinder scope.. there probably is stuff that also works well but the REDEX works and its only R28 a bottle!

@ Street Racer

how do you apply REDEX i think ive got the same problem too, open road its so light on fuel but city driving ud swear its a V8 it gulps and i am a lazy driver, engine hardly ever sees the right side of 4000 RPM so i think its the same.

i add one bottle to half a tank fuel!

LMAO you see there i was going to add it into the engine directly :hammerhead: through the oilcap :hammerhead: would have had more issues then some carbon build up after that :cursin:

im sure there would have been directions on the bottle though thanks Clutchplate:thumbsup:

That seems about right for a 320i, i get similar consumption. Any spirited urban driving and the cosumption goes right up. On the open road its quite economical.
the e46 320i is sluggish below 4000rpm.

I was having the same issue with my E90 320i.

Took it to BMW, the removed and installed air cleaner.

On Weekend when going to Rustenburg, i was getting 7.1 avg spd 140km/h(Cruise Control). But in the city i m getting 8.0.
