Fuel and economy

I must post this because the difference is too much. This is for a 320d.

I filled up at BP near where I live (Glenfair) and my consumption was higher than usual. I usually get 9.5 l/100km and I started filling up at this BP because it's convenient. The last tank I drove much more cautiously and with as light a foot as possible and I could not get it below 9.9. So I decided it must be the fuel, or there's something gone wrong with the engine. I drove to the nearest Shell and put in some V-power diesel, now my fuel consumption is consistently sitting at 8.6 (normal driving).

Shocked I am.

Your consumption is way to high for a 320d generally speaking how, often do you reset your average aswell as your avg speed

I get the best consumption using Engen. Interesting:fencelook:

x2 Engen best consumption for me
followed by Caltex
then BP
never again Shell the worst for me...

I reset every tank to keep track of what's going on (sometimes I'll reset to see what it will do on a specific trip), but I also check how far each tank gets me. I drive very short and up hills immediately as I leave home, so the car's still cold while the hills. I accelerate decently. Not mad, but not granny either. But I'm very conscious of how I drive. Also because I drive short distances, the car is cold for most of the way to my destination.

The fuel consumption figures I posted were 0% highway (average speed is about 30 - 35). Claimed, the car should get 7.9. 8.6 isn't that much higher, so if it stays there for the tank or even gets to 9 dead, I'll be happy. On the N1 it gets about 5.5. On a long trip I'll see - I'm going away next week (yay! - the first time in over 2 years).

In 6000km I'm going to EGR bypass and try get rid of the PF and maybe a decat. That will be about 8 months time. :)

That's interesting! I'll give the other garages a try. I think it might not be the fuel, but rather how clean the specific garage's tanks are.

Eish. Those figures are still high in my opinion...

I drive 50% town and 50% highway and I get about 900km from a tank...

those figures are extremely high, I drive a return trip of a bout 30km to work and back daily, 40% high way and 60% robot traffic. I drive my car hard, and its now sitting at 6.5l/100km

I drive down and up a hill to work and down and up a hill home. 2.5km per trip.

Normal urban about 10km a trip not completely flat, I get about 6.5.

Yes it could be the garage because I threw in shell at one garage and it went nice then at another shell garage and my car was jerking all the time... but I dont want to add shell... happy with engen...

my fuel consumptions... i wont mention :nonono:

I need to chip my car... anyone here in CPT tune their car?

I find it can vary from Garage to Garage...

Way too high for a 320d IMO :nonono:

Mine settles at 7/100 for my daily traffic drive and heavy driving once I am clear.. I do not trust shell.. Sasol/Engen have been working for me, but at stated already it varies from.one filling station to the next..

I assume 1 320d in Joburg and 1 320d in cape town will have different consumptions..

Which one should be better?

OH and I tried all garages... Engen gets the nodd:thumbs:

The consumption of your 320d is about correct considering the distance to your work is only 2.5km. My daily commute is about 16km and at the start (after about 2km) the consumption is about 9l/100km and when i reach work it varies, usually between 5l/100km and 6l/100km depending on traffic.

The higher air presssure at the coast should give an improvement of a few % on fuel consumption and performance, altough not as big a difference compared to a naturally aspirated car at +- 10%

I gave up with my consumption. When it feels like it is in a good mood I get 6.3l per 100km. Other time 7.3l per 100km. Now I just ignore it and drive.
On average I get R1 a km. So if I fill R700 I get 700km. But then again I drive with 3 people in the car everyday. I do 100km return trip to work and back. 70% highway with traffic here and there. Rest is local.

I use Bp so far it seems to be working for me. I tried sasol seems to finish quicker. Same with engen.

But again maybe its the garage.

Exactly. Switch off the thing that shows you what your usage is and just drive.

Hi Gents

I am from Cape Town
I drive 25km work and 25km back. 60% high way 40% stop go.
I get around 5.8l per 100km with std rims. Fitted 17inch and is standing on 6.4l per 100km.
I have 2003 E46 320d facelift 121000km.

I also notice if i fill with R400 i could get close to that km even en few km more all depents on how i drive but never got less. Wil see with the bigger tyres now and if that could make such a big diffrence
