Front Brake Pad replacement DIY

I need to replace the front bake pads on my E30 318i. This is something I've never done before, but it looks pretty easy enough.

I just want to get some input from guys who has done it them selfs. Is there any specific tools I'll need? Anything I need to look out for?

I found this vid on youtube, but it's of a E46 and he does a bit more than just replace the pads. Still, from what I gather it's pretty much the same procedure??

I think the procedure should be pretty much the same.

There should be two bolts that will allow you to loosen the bit of the callipers the that pads go into. Loosen them, then slide it off the discs, depending how old the discs are this might be harder to do, but you should be able to free it by just wiggling it out. Remove the pads, then open the the brake fluid reservoir and use a clamp of some sort (like a G-clamp) to push the piston back, be careful when doing this so that the reservoir doesn't overflow, you don't want brake fluid on you bodywork. Put in the new pads, then replace the the centre part of the calliper, and the bolts.

Maybe post up a pic or two of the callipers and I could give better pointers if you need more help.

I don't thing you have to worry about this to much it is not a very involved procedure.

Take wheel off then at the back of the caliper there are two mounting pins . Loosen the bolt on each mounting pin ( 13 or 14 mm spanner )-you may need to hold the pin with a spanner as well . The caliper can now be pulled away from the disc . If the disc is worn you may need to move piston away from disc in order to remove caliper ,I normally stick a screwdriver in through the caliper and move the pad away from the disc . Don't let caliper hang and damage brake hose . Good luck

Thanks guys.

I was just about to start work on Saturday when the rain came. It then continued to rain, then some sun, then some more rain, then some sun, then some more rain, and this went on yesterday as well.

Luckily the brakes aren't screaming yet. Here's hoping the weather service is right and it won't rain this Saturday.
