Okay,
So I own an e46 ///M3 have owned a 135i, Z4 35i and an e92 ///M3 and my take would be:
I hated the Z4 and got rid of it within 6 months of purchasing it.
E46 is just incredible car from a handling perspective. My experience is that it is better on the track than the e92.
E92 ///M3 V8 is EPIC, especially with a Schnitzer exhaust
x35 are good, tunable and fun but will never stack up to the ///M experience.
Of the three, both ///M's are just a more rounded offering. They go, brake and handle amazingly. I found my 135i was twitchy by comparison and was just never as composed as an ///M.
I still cannot answer which is the "better" car. The e46 has just incredible handling and the e92 just sounds and goes like only a high revving NA V8 can. I call it a tie between the two.
So in answer to your question... moving from a e46 to an x35i is probably going to leave you feeling cheated. Stick with the e46 or go the whole hog and bagan e92 ///M.
