Faulty valvetronic / eccentric shaft sensor

Hi Guys,

Another newbie here.

I have a E46 318Ti with a faulty eccentric shaft position sensor (valvetronic sensor on the eccentric shaft) so the car does not rev over 4000rpms. I have 2 q's:

1) It this a common problem on the valvetronic cars?
2) How can I get it fixed cos the stealers are ridiculas with the price of the sensor?

sup, I have a similar problem. 2004 318i, The EML light comes on, when i did a diagnostic, it showed up as valvetronic fault.

E-car midrand wanted to charge me R16000 to replace the valvetronic motor and sensor. I phoned BMW both parts come to R8000 incl. vat. add roughly 3 hours to replace both parts at R300 / hour. you may be spending roughly R8500 to 9500 to get the valvetronic motor and sensor changed.

Im not sure whats up with your car, but if youre in durbs i Suggest you contact RM Autotech - Speak to Rupesh 0832892744. This guy specialises in BMW's. He is one of the best non dealer guys, whilst still at a reasonable price. In youre in Jozi, ive been told got to TuneTech, as they are the best in Jozi, and if in Capetown go to ZeeMax.

My opinion, take the car to any of these peoples, let them test the car. and let them do the job. These guys are masters.

I'm in Empangeni, and we have an excellent non dealer this side - BM Tech, but thanks for the other references.

I managed to locate a used sensor from Bruces's in CT for like R650, :excited: hopefully that will sort out my woo's. We are unable to test/teach the valvetronic motor because of the faulty sensor, so we not 100% sure about the motor as well.....I hope thats not stuffed

I completely understand where youre coming from sourcing a second hand part. Ive been there also, but I must say that its not necessarily the best Idea to buy second hand electronic components. I dont know what a new sensor costs, but i would advise you to try and source a new one.

you wont know how long the second hand part is going to last and they dont usually come with a gaurantee. but if this part does have a gaurantee, then cool go ahead.

also, be careful that youre not being ripped off. make a few calls yourself and check what the components cost. I was nearly ripped off, dont allow this to happen to you.

hi There, I think my 118I N46 engine has the same issue, I recently took my car in after the yellow engine light came on and we determined that the VVT system is definetely failing after scanning the error codes, Getting the whole job done though will cost me about 11K which is a bit too much for me right now.

1.) where in JHB can I go for to get this sorted at a lesser price
2.)How safe is it for me to continue driving the car? I noticed a little bit of smoke coming from the bottom of the engine after driving a few Km's

hi There, I think my 118I N46 engine has the same issue, I recently took my car in after the yellow engine light came on and we determined that the VVT system is definetely failing after scanning the error codes, Getting the whole job done though will cost me about 11K which is a bit too much for me right now.

1.) where in JHB can I go for to get this sorted at a lesser price
2.)How safe is it for me to continue driving the car? I noticed a little bit of smoke coming from the bottom of the engine after driving a few Km's

Gizmo changed the VVT motor on the wife's car, was a lot cheaper than what u were quoted. Give him a call, he gives good advice.

I’m not sure if this applies to you as I am not familiar with the engine. However, after the valve cover gasket changed on our e90 323i we had erratic idle on start up.

Long story short, it turned out to be the vanos solenoids, we cleaned them out and put them back in, car has been running smooth ever since.

The symptoms did also point to oil getting onto the eccentric sensor that runs to the valvetronic motor, but the codes pointed to the solenoids.

hi, I sent the car to Techno spec in JHB and turned to be the valvetronic motor, got a new one installed and the sensor and tapet gasket cover.

car is fine now just need to change the diff as its making funny noises
