F80 for G11??!!

Hi guys

Would love to know fanatics thoughts on this this. Making my head spin a little.

I was offered by a dealer to swop out my f80 for a demo 7 series. The dealer actually has two in stock, a 730d and a 740i. Both cars a similarly specced with a nice list of extras that included m sport 20" and a host of technological features like laser lights and Napa seats, etc.

If I work out the figures that car has already taken a hit of almost 400k off the list price With less than 5k on the clock.

I know it's not the same class of car, but I have always loved the luxurious ride and build quality of the seven. I am a real sucker for technology.

On the other hand the m3 is going up by a further 60k end of this month.

What u guys think. Would u do it ? How much more will this car loose if let's say I wait another six months ?

Btw my car has only 2000k on the clock.

Well, I have always said that if you buy a 7, the future value should NEVER cross your mind because then you're buying the wrong car.

When I asked the dealer why they offering it so "cheap" he said bmw SA is putting lot of pressure on them to move x amount of units so they taking a big loss on the car.
How true this is - no idea

More like they're making a smaller profit than they usually would. I don't believe it to be a loss at all...

Dealerships buy these vehicles at ridiculously cheap prices compared to what they retail here for.

Yep. Making a smaller profit on the 7 and knowing they can make a bigger profit on the M3. Win won for them.

I wouldn't do it.

If you bought the //M to have an //M car, you will be disappointed.

if you don't mind a really nice lounge suite that can actually handle, but not an //M, its a no brainer, get the 7

However.

F80 is going to relatively keep its value, the 7 will cliff dive in terms of depreciation, as you can clearly see already. if your buying it 400k behind, you may just be OK... however careful..

I would keep the ///M. The 7 series is a luxurious sedan with technological advances that are far superior than the rest. But in terms of driving, the ///M offers daily and track driving abilities. I don't think you would want the 7 series on the track :=):

hmm, take a test drive or ask the dealer to let you have it for a night.. as everyone says it comes down to what you want out the car, the 7 is insane comfort, and the M doesn't have much of that..

But hey, all joking aside, surely the two cars are polls apart in terms of drive and feel? I have not had the privilege of driving either car so my comments are not based on experience.

However, in a similar comparison, I got out of an E90 Sportpack 320d into my X3 20d.... The two cars were as different as night and day. Sure they both have similar engines but that's where it ends. You really feel the size and weight of the X3 compared to the 320d; my dad has the 320d exclusive which I actually drove yesterday and I forgot how much "get up and go" the 320d has over the X3.

BUT, in the above comparison, the X3 is sooo much more comfy to drive than the 320d:=):

So I guess its about deciding your application. Couple that with how long you intend keeping the cars because as was previously stated, the M will hold value significantly better than a 7 series....

The F80 is holding more value than F82 as it stands since there are less around with low kms...
Most probably looking for one for a client so don't believe their nonsense about taking a loss.

Imo, I wouldn't give up the F80 for a 7 though, if you bought an ///M its because you want/prefer the speed, handling and pure aggression you get when behind the wheel. I doubt you will get these things driving a 7 series, its more for luxury & cruising. However, if you feel its time you went that route, then go for it!
But I would still keep the F80...

You have to keep in mind one thing though.

While the 7 is boat like, its a different class of car. BMW spends a great deal more in suspension development, and it has a lot more gizmo's then your average 3.

I see NO reason why you wouldn't take your 7 onto the track, even if its just to scare the pidgeons.

Compared to an //M tuned suspension, obviously not, but don't diss it because it is big,

Further, the G11 has had a completely new design on its suspension, the active suspension actually works, in that its a comfy lump in comfort mode, and super responsive in Sport, apparently they managed to get it right with the G11

I say take the 730d for a test drive, and see if you can scare the salesman.

I would not take the 740, as you will land up with the same problem I have with the 535i

Everbody makes modes and things for the F30 340i with hardly anything available for the 5 or 7, and if you do get its way more expensive.

And be honest, the 7 is a gentlemans car, you don't mod that, and sad to say this but the Twin Turbo petrol 6 Cyl just simply does NOT HAVE enough torque, especially coming out of a //M

The diesel will give you more torque then the //M before and after tune, it wont be as quick, though...

But besides, who really wants to drive the 7 that quick when you can fit 3 strippers in the back ...

I would take the 7 simply because I don't live on the track and feel what I can do in the ///M on daily missions, the 7 can almost do....with more gadgets.

Keep the M, unless your reasons for buying the M have changed significantly.

IMO the 7 is just a 7, the M3 however is the benchmark.

I would Keep the F80 , The 7 is a lovely car but just not worth the financial loss .
your F80 will hold its value and be easier to sell or trade in the future with minimal loss .

Dealer probably sitting with the 7, difficult to sell
M3 will sell much easier and quicker, probably has a buyer lined up already.

Dealer wants to make his problem your problem.
Keep the M, unless you want a 7.
