F30 suspension knock

Ever since I got my F30 early last year I could definitely hear a knock from the front right suspension. With mine being one of the very 1st F30s off the production line for this brand new model I thought perhaps this is what the new suspension sounds like..

I did mention it twice at 2 different dealers which could not really pick anything up.. Well the noise was persistent and surely I thought to myself after travelling with friends in another F30 there is no noise from this one.. So on Weds my F30 went in for a routine service: Oil, Filters & Brakes.

This time I mentioned it again and was greeted with excellent service, immediately the service consultant got the lead tech out to go on a drive with me and they noted 3 noises: 1) The rattle from the steering column, 2) The rattle from the interior light and 3) The knock coming from the front right suspension as I have always been complaining about..

They took the matter up very seriously and low and behold with the entire suspension dropped on the car and numerous emails to BMW technical about default settings being adjusted, etc. they have now ordered me a new steering rack which will be installed tomorrow. Top class service as they actually listen to what their clients have to say, other dealers just don't care and they seriously ruin the brand reputation by not doing their jobs properly..

I must admit I have been annoyed having to pick and choose one of the VWs to drive around with now but all in all I am glad my daily baby is getting sorted.. They also said they have replaced about 6 racks on F30s thus far at this dealer alone.. Guess I will finally appreciate the F30 after this as mine has had the knock since day 1..

So if you have a knocking noise take your F30 in and have it checked out!

great service, glad they noted it and are sorting it out. Can be frustrating trying to explain noises to people and they look at you like WTF...

Thanks guys yeah I am more than happy with their service. This is my preferred dealer of choice JSN Bryanston rocks!!

First time that a dealer listens to me! So the rack is arriving at 1 today I will have my baby back early next week as they have to re-adjust the suspension settings and do alignment again.

Sounds very similar to mine but mine was also much worse when turning into Driveways at an angle then there is a bad knock on the front right.. Best have it looked at as other dealers told me it was a buckled rim.. Yeah right..

Let us know if it solved the problem

I had a ratlle when car was in gear and standing still. It sounded like a pipe against a heat shield or body. In the end it mas an engine mounting making the noise. With the old one out and new one in the rattle is gone

Nicely done! Which Dealership did you go to the second time?

Bought the car from Alberante - excllent dealership for routine work ARC is good too. Goes there for routine services when I am at home. They did not pick up anything wrong so I thought that is what the F30 sounds like on the road.

Engine was replaced at Auto Glen - they did a superb job of doing that but the suspension noise was apparently a buckled rim..

When I'm at the office she goes to JSN - o my how I love it there with the 325iS always being there :inlove:. Best dealer I have ever been to!

She is smooth as silk on the road now.. :praise: There were serious issues with this car's electronic steering rack after feeling how she drives now.

Feels like a different car!

That is correct yes, I have a 2013 built engine now
Car was caught in a flash flood early Jan of this year (does not even bother to ask what roads turn into rivers we all know why...) - water got into the intake and that was the end of it.. :bangdesk: one of threads have all the details of what I what through..

But back to the suspension now... O my the car is setup absolutely brilliantly after the new steering rack was installed, took on a few corners tonight after work and I was all smiles.. way less tyre squeel taking the 270 helix off ramps at the speeds I love to.. Car feels solid and sticks like a BMW should!

Excellent job they did.. JSN is awesome, no wonder they are a ACS dealer..

So an update on this.. It's been about 2 weeks and the suspension has obviously settled in now, earlier this week I noticed the steering wheel started to go off center little by little each day.

Yesterday afternoon when I parked the car and the steering wheel was dead center the left wheel was turned right so far that it almost looked like it was on full lock. The right wheel was also turned to the right but not as much. Car is pulling to the left quit badly..

So it's going back tomorrow - that F10 is starting to look like an option...

properly upsetting.
I maintain the best built BMW's are the e39's and e46's. To date.

You are most probably right - have rarely heard of an E39 going wrong myself! I'm scared to buy another BMW new off the floor after this one's woes too.. *sigh*

1st generation of a brand new model will always have the most issues, its like this will all car manufacturers. :thumbdo:

Yup this is very true.. Then again I moved to a LCI E90 from the original model and that one too had issues with the clutch which never got resolved in the later build either - in fact it was worse than the pre-LCI..

I guess I have bad luck when it comes to this, I always end up with a problematic BMW.. :thumbdo:

So... my car is finally sorted (besides the USB which is stuffed) again but by no means thanks to BMW who did not work on the car due to the following 2 issues...

2 new rear tyres fitted, one made 2 bubbles again :bangdesk: left rim is slightly buckled but very slightly.. (will buy a new rim soon)

While under the car I was shown that the bolt in the pic below was never tightened thus the alignment was pulling off while I was driving.. so what could have happened when this bolt decided to go mia while on a road trip? :argh:
