F30 observations over 3200KM trip

So I took the 320d on a 3200KM roadtrip and I have the following to report:

After 1150KM of solid driving (about 10 hours) having only stopped a bit to stretch legs, get food/fuel etc.. I noted that the temp started to raise slightly above the 100 deg it usually sits at (I guess to about 105) and it fell down to 100 again when the sun set.. After 1350KM and 4 provinces later the temp remained normal the rest of the 1850KMs

Avg consumption was 6.1 l/100km over the total KMs keeping the car in Eco Pro and poping it into Sport to overtake etc.. I filled up when I reached just under half tank as I hate running with low fuel though.

The F30 grips like hell on a gravel road doing 100-120.. Overtaking on sopping wet roads were also a breeze at speed the car is well balanced! The only issue is overtalking at slower speeds on wet roads then the tail kicks out.. Our national roads are in a horrid state in general.. I had to swerve for so many tarmac bulges which would have ripped the IC clean off..

I dropped something on the driver's side footwell and when I eventually decided to look for it the next day I noted that there was corrosion on the seat's metal frame.. I know this was an issue in the US but seems like we have it too. So my fellow F30 owners please check yours as well! The 12v adapter on the rear centre console also stopped working after the trip - nothing was plugged in?

Just thought I'd share my observations.. All things considered I love my F30 and my decision to buy a diesel

you drive gravel roads with your Beemer?

The R road I was on just stopped and I had about 5KMs to go on the gravel so I decided to take it slow (40km/h) ... but it was dusk and after the 5KMs I realisdd I had to turn off to another gravel road then I decided no way.. at that point while I was standing still a bakkie slammed on brakes passing me and just as I turned around to go back the bakkie also turned around so being paranoid as I am I decided screw this I am hooning it back to the main road before it gets dark... Car did well

Nice write up dude!

Awesome that you really enjoying your car!!! 6.1l/100km seems abit high for the diesel on long trips...it should be giving you a slightly lower consumption...

Thanks man!

Yeah I thought it was a bit high too it is claimed to be 4.4l / 100 on the open road.. Then again the new engine has done 5000KMs now so it mighy get better soon..

I take into account that the boot was loaded, my nitro truck and all its goodies were on the rear seat too and that the rain/winds would cause more drag too over such a haul but I expected about 5/100 to be honest.

Nice writeup! :)

I believe the rusty seat frames on the F30 are a well known problem. As far as I know BMW advised dealerships to check for this at the first service and replace if affected, instead of doing a recall as it's not life threatening.

If it really bugs you (it would irritate the hell out of me), take it to your dealership and ask them to sort it out for you.

Thanks! To be honest it does bother me and now more knowing that they were mandated to check for this when the car comes in.. Mine has been to the dealers about 10 times since I got her and nothing was done..

It's booked in at the dealer I bought her from for this and for the 12v plug which is not working..
