So am I. I did some more reading on the matter this morning as it is still bothering me. In terms of the manual, if the battery runs low, the auto start/stop will not function in order to keep the battery charged or charging. The car switched off via auto start/stop and would not start again. the message on the dash was: "Transmission Drive Moderately".
The techie who was sent to the brake down, disconnected the battery in order to perform a hard reboot. When that did not work, he atthed his battery booster to the car and it still would not start.
The job card indicated: Charging battery; Performing vehicle test; and Carry out diagnosis when I collected the car from the workshop.
When I spoke with the workshop person on Monday when the car was booked in, he asked me what error message the car displayed and I told him. When he did his thing while we were talking, he indicated that the system brought up two issues while he was capturing the info.
1. Low battery
2. Transmission drive moderatley.

Hi Mr Max

Sorry to hear about your woes. As you said rightly, if the battery level is too low the msa (auto start stop) should prevent the car from turning off.

I obviously havent seen the car or read the codes, but this could mean that:
1) The battery level isnt being read correctly (by the DME or the MSA - I am not familar with where the start stop function is actually controlled from) - it thinks the voltage is higher than it is.

or

2) Could be a software issue as Coisman was saying

or

3) It could just be a faulty a DME/MSA. (more generic than point 1)

If you can, ask the dealership to give you a print out of the codes and environmental conditions (before they clear them!)

Good Luck

Thank you Guys, its official...the fight for a replacement of the vehicle is on. The dealership kept and used the vehicle over the weekend to see whether the problem would re-occur, and it did. This after they brought in another techie to reload the software on Friday past.
So now for the hard fight. I want to speak to the techie directly today to try and ascertain what exactly the issue is, no jam around the mouth. I figure this would assist other F30 owners on the forum.:argh:

Some feedback on the matter. I have been invited to meet with the dealer principal, workshop foreman and some other top brass at the dealership tomorrow. Don't really know what his is about, but will advise you guys of the issue with the car thereafter.

Hey Mr Max

So what was the outcome of your meeting? Anything constructive?

I have been doing some research... It seems that the system is sensitive to using old/worn out batteries. You mentioned in the very first post that the car had been standing for some time. I would suggest swapping the battery for a new one (at least one that works), and seeing if the issue returns.

Failing that, another thing to look at is the Intelligent Battery Sensor. If there was a faulty reading from that, it could cause the battery charge level to run too low.

When the battery ran flat the first time, would it just not start automatically, or would it just not start at all (MSA off)?

Hope you have some good news for us!

EDIT:
Have the codes been read?

:fencelook: I did not think that it would be the Battery alone, this is another issue that is the cause of this problem.

We wait in anticipation mate.

Hi Guys, apologies for the late response. The meeting took place and the dealer principal went through the history, the problem and how it was discovered and fixed. this would appear to have genuinely been a bad apple in the batch. They traced the problem to a lose earth wire which caused different voltage related issues causing the malfunction. No faulty DME and it threw out 25 to 30 error codes, hence the difficulty in tracing the problem.
I have had the car a few days now, so far so good. I sincerely hope this is the end of it. Needless to say, no replacement, I got the car that I bought back!
