F30 Gearbox Malfunction

the low battery warning was prob from running diagnostics on the car without a battery charger on, however the error saying "transmission-drive moderatly" sounds a little more ominous...

keep an eye out for any signs that stand out...

I am glad this is sorted.

In terms of the low battery you have to remember that when the car is running low on battery some strange things can happen. On some of the older models weird things would happen when the battery is not properly charged. On the E46 the headlights would flicker and turn on and the temp gauge would go into the red and some other things as well. These symptoms would make you think the car is busted but it is simply the battery.

In this case I am sure that the low battery might have caused the other issue with the gearbox as well. Of course monitor the situation but I am sure it was just the battery so I wouldn't worry too much at this point.

If the battery was completely discharged and had very low current then it is possible for the car to go into limp mode, I believe that this is what happened and that the gearbox message was caused by a lack of current. But keep an eye on it.

:fencelook: Im confused - if that battery was flat and died when you where driving - then it will die again as it will run flat again, as the alternator cannot be charging correctly - otherwise it would have charged while you where driving it

So am I. I did some more reading on the matter this morning as it is still bothering me. In terms of the manual, if the battery runs low, the auto start/stop will not function in order to keep the battery charged or charging. The car switched off via auto start/stop and would not start again. the message on the dash was: "Transmission Drive Moderately".
The techie who was sent to the brake down, disconnected the battery in order to perform a hard reboot. When that did not work, he atthed his battery booster to the car and it still would not start.
The job card indicated: Charging battery; Performing vehicle test; and Carry out diagnosis when I collected the car from the workshop.
When I spoke with the workshop person on Monday when the car was booked in, he asked me what error message the car displayed and I told him. When he did his thing while we were talking, he indicated that the system brought up two issues while he was capturing the info.
1. Low battery
2. Transmission drive moderatley.
I have an idea - nothing discharges the Battery as much as a big sound system paying for a long time - or leaving the headlights on for a bit.....then see if it happens again ?
If you take it for a drive (long) it should be charged to normal operating and your problem solved. Good luck anyways.

Soooo...MikeR might be right!!!!!!!!!!! It happened again yesterday. :argh: Driving as per normal the car shut down at an intersection with the auto start/stop engaged and would not start again. Called BMW on call and a tow truck was sent out. Because it is auto, the car would not engage neutral without power and therefore could not be pulled onto the roll bed.
The driver attached his battery pack to the car - and - low and behold, the car started. I decided to have it towed anyway as the car was supposedly sorted on Tuesday when I got it back after the first incident on Saturday!
Mileage at the time of second incident ............ 179 kms:nonono:
Error message: Transmission. Drive moderately
Waiting on a response from the dealership. contemplating on demanding a replacement..........................................................................:bangdesk:

Hey man

Sorry to hear about your troubles with the new car! I hope the dealership can sort this out, although I would demand a new vehicle!!

Just make sure that your car's front bumper is not scratched at the bottom from the load unload on the truck....

BMW what is going on with the poor quality and service :yuck::nonono:

Keep us posted.

Damn....this is beyond suck. Mr. Max send an immediate complaint to bmw SA via customer service in writing and a letter to the dealership of your frustration. Express your disatisfaction with the purchase. The letters serve as an important paper trail if you need to take steps further.

So far 3 reports on this forum of major issues with a brand new F30 & F10...its becoming the rule...:argh:

+1 on what twinz said on the papertrail...

i didnt wanna jinx it when you had the first issue but damn it! its come back again...

this failure is just not acceptable...also they cant blame it on a battery like they did last time, that battery ran down cos they were diagnosing the car without a battery charger in place...

if you press really hard on them now you will probably be succesfull in getting a new car..

Hey Mr Max, not the greatest way of 'getting into your new ride' I would say.

Seems likes it keeps on pointing back to the battery each time, after start stop function engaged? (If I read correctly on all the posts)

The amount of strain being put on the batt each time when the starter is engeaged to 'swing' the motor is quite a lot, and needs a fairly good time of charging after each start, in order to replace that energy used for starting the engine.

A question, did you ask them to replace the battery with a new one perhaps? Once a batt gets low to a certain stage in it's life time, the only cure is to replace it with a brand new one. (Thats my experience)

Good luck & keep us updated. :=):
