F30 Boot release

Hi all

I was just thinking of some weird scenarios lately, and wondering if there is a way to manually open the trunk on a BMW F30 320i.

I am thinking if the battery is flat, and the remote does not work to unlock, and I have all the tools including jump cables in the boot.

Unfortunately I have the model where the rear seats do not fold down, so cannot access the boot from inside the car.

Is there a manual way to open the boot perhaps with the manual key in the key fob?

If there is no key hole for the trunk you will have to jump start it from the terminals in the bonnet and then open the boot from the inside/key fob.

If there no key at all inside the FOB like the E90/92?

There is a key. But I cannot find a place to put the key into near the trunk. I can only open the driver's side door.

That is the problem, what if the only jump leads I have are in the boot?

I suppose that’s when you will have to come up with solutions rather than more problems..

Phone a friend, walk to Midas/Autozone, phone AA.

Chances of you battery draining to such an extent is luckily very slim unless you have a tracking device or something similar that is draining the power. Even then, you should still be able to open the boot electronically.

Put a booster pack on the terminals in the engine bay :roflol:

I saw a YouTube video where the guy put a piece of paper/cardboard between the boot/bumper catch so that it didn't close while the battery was disconnected :hammerhead:

I normally take a screwdriver to push in the “catch” of the locking mechanism when disconnecting the battery. That way there is no way it could close/lock with the battery disconnected.

Just like this:

Thanks Ferdi

That is what I was thinking... as the solution, but I think BMW could have thought the idea out better and included an option....

For sure!

I suppose you could also go through the ski hatch with a piece of wire, get ahold of the emergency boot release handle (glow in the dark one) and pull that to open the boot.

Problem is my vehicle doesn't have the ski hatch... :blueCry:

Eish

I made a ski hatch in my F30
But yeah I would just call BMW on call or AA when it of plan.

BeemerFanatic, How did you make your own hatch?

I would be keen to figure a way to make the seats fold or a ski hatch if possible, mainly for those larger items.

No split seat no key hole, that's a bummer.

Yip, that is true Bavarian1... Luckily I am not in the situation, but I have this nasty habit of thinking out weird scenarios and then wondering what I would do... :)

I think BMW did think it out, Once out of plan, no Roadside assistance, convince you to buy another car.

BMW only thinks as far as motorplan, thereafter we have to come up with solutions.

Use the remote key part to manually unlock the driver door. Theoretically, all the doors (and boot) should unlock...

Not if there isn't any power to the car

I have the center armrest in the back seats. When you put the armrest down, there's a black plastic cover, it just pulls down, top to bottom.

Then Cut the metal neatly between the support bars.
And cut the carpet, what we did was neatly fold the carpet and glue it so there are no cut metal parts exposed.

Thanks BeemerFanatic. That sounds like a great idea... And will help when needing to carry slightly longer items.

Will look into this...
