What are your early impressions of the car?
what do and don't you like about the car?

With just over 2000 kilometers under belt I must say the car is an absolutely pleasure to drive. I haven't explored much on the performance side and so far am enjoying the comfort, refinements and technology.

Overall the technology in this car is on a different level. To me, it feels like I am in a mini 7 series. The HUD is a pleasure and presents information when applicable. The control display is addictive and I am enjoying using my iPhone 4s in the car via the snap-in adapter.

The steering wheel is comfortable to hold and the overall feel is good. The paddles are well positioned and have a positive action. The controls on the steering wheel essentially enable me to drive the car once moving (set speed, accelerate, brake), use the phone, issue voice commands (doesn't always understand me), play music and adjust volume.

I still need to upload music to the hard drive and will do so this weekend. I believe this will eliminate the small lag experienced when reading from the iPhone. Will let you know how this goes.

It is über cool to be able to download the latest software from BMW germany and update the car software. Yes, I am a bit of a nerd.

The gearbox is very intelligent and I am totally amazed at what they have done here. Gear changes are smooth and when required, she is ready to serve :) The gear changes in sport mode are blistering quick and I can feel each change as the mechanics provide feedback through the body.

The sports seats are very comfortable and can be adjusted in many different ways, including adjusting the lateral support. Overall the interior is very spacious and will make for a great family car.

The ground clearance in the front is great and it has been easy to drive without an issue into my driveway and into the car park at work. With the Ford and Mazda it takes some consideration otherwise the front bumper scraps.

Still to explore / sort out. Note, I have an eye for detail and fortunately/unfortunately notice the smallest of things:

- the front bonnet edge isn't 100% aligned with the nose and needs to be adjusted
- the one boot spring is making a noise
- the driver side windscreen wiper slightly hits the A pillar when at full tilt
- haven't been able to connect to the Internet on the control display

The car has been booked in to address these issues next week Monday.

What don't I like?
- BMW use the same panel around the clocks irrespective of the car spec. When the sun shines on the panel I can see lane departure even though I don't have this.
- with comfort access there should be a button to close the boot. Like on the 7 series.
- there are 5 small areas on the body that could have been finished off better.

in summary, I LOVE MY CAR :inlove::thumbs::joy:

Wow...thank for the detailed feedback.
Had no idea you can download the latest software and we can update it ourselves...you are right, that's uber cool..I am kind of a tech nerd too

as for the issues you having; front bonnet edge which isn't 100% aligned and the boot spring making noise and the wiper.... I would feel the exact same way..I am kind of a perfectionist with a dose of OCD..lol..
Hopefully they will sort it out cause that's not acceptable after paying so much for a car.

Let us know how you do manage to sort out the internet connection issue, as it may be useful to us later.

BTW are you experiencing any steering wheel vibrations which some users have reported in the USA?

I am still undecided on comfort access, after using it, would you say it is worth it?

Not experiencing any steering wheel vibration.

Confirmed, my car has the headrest issue and I will address this with the garage on Monday.

Thanks for the information!

I am enjoying the comfort access. Being able to open the boot with parcels in both hands is great. Just the other day it was raining so I couldn't place a parcel on the ground to find the key / open the boot... doing the one foot open sesame tick was very cool. Plus opening and closing the doors without the key is super convenient. In my opinion, this option is worth the initial cost.

Also, for whatever reason my Internet connection worked today. It may be that the phone needs to complete syncing before I attempt an Internet connection.

Could you tell if it made any difference upgrading? I cannot figure out how to do it as when I enter the last seven digit of the VIN at www.bmw.com/update it says invalid number?

I haven't noticed any difference besides knowing I have the latest version installed, which is always important :=):

Try browsing directly to this link: http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/navigation/bluetooth/bluetooth_software_update_vin.jsp

I don't have my VIN number with me to test the page mentioned above. Will try when I get home and let you know.

Hello Petri. Just tested the link above and using the last 7 characters on my VIN number provides me with a downloadable 6.6MB file.

Perhaps contact the dealership and ask them what's up.

Hi Law

How she's treating you? What happened when you took it in to fix minor problems. What did they say about head rest issue?

Law great feedback. Hope the little issues get sorted.
Look forward to your performance review sometime.

1. Iphone: download the bmw connect app and connect to idrive through bluetooth. Should get rid of the delay. Or just put the CD in and the music will download automatically on the HD. You can also tweak the settings via Idrive.

2. Email & Facebook will connect using the same bmw connect app on your Iphone. You can browse using your idrive. Clumsy at the beginning. Eventually you wont use it... Quicker just to do it on your phone.

3. Best part of the app is that you can listen to all the great radio stations like Jakaranda and most american country stations...simply fantastic :joy:

The car is magnificent. I took her to Auric Auto in Claremont to sort out the minor issues and what a disaster! I will share my experience with you guys when I am back in CPT on sunday. Typing a long story via the iPhone is painful.

I never raised the headrest issue them. Not too concerned as the headrests will always be at their lowest setting in my car.

The performance review will be published sometime in the future ;) i just need to find a runway. She is just shy of 3000 km now and I am still taking it easy and haven't revved her over 4500 rpm yet. Even so, that is ample as can be seem in the overseas reviews... 3100 rpm in 8th gear equates to 180 km/h :D

Yip, I am using the BMW app and it works well. I still need to download some stuff to the hard drive, so thanks for the tip. I totally agree with your second point and feel BMW need to work on some usability aspects with regards to Internet related services via the control display / idrive. Doesn't listening to the overseas stations consume a lot of data?

I went by the dealer on Friday to get my number plates. I mentioned the head rest issue and they did not even know about it. I am also not in the least concern about it since the headrests will be in the lowest setting always in my car too.

I took my car to Auric Auto in Claremont to sort out some minor niggles I had with my vehicle. The assessment was done and I booked my car in for the next day. The list of items were as follows:

- Driver side boot spring makes a noise when closing boot lid
- Driver side windscreen wiper seems to be hitting a-pillar
- Brakes squeak when slowing down, below 5km/h
- The bonnet (leading edge) isn't flush

The next morning, I arrived and after about 20 minutes was requested to please book my car in again. For some reason the previous process I had been through which was validated by a SMS confirmation now didn't reflect on their system or schedule.

A couple of hours later and the car was ready for collection. I was unfortunately in a hurry and didn't take the time to carefully assess what had been done. But then again, with BMW being a premium product I would expect premium service, unrealistic of me?

I stopped at the BP around the corner to fill up and to my horror noticed a deep 2.5 cm scratch on the bonnet, just in front of the windscreen wiper. There was also three black ink marks on the boot lid.

Law-335i-bonnet-damage.jpg

The next day, after hardly sleeping, I went back to the garage to report the incident. What followed was that the workshop manager and client service person got involved and I must admit they were very professional.

In summary, my car had to be taken to their BMW approved panel shop in Strand and they politely asked if their driver could collect my vehicle. At this point I was thinking they can't even do minor adjustments without scratching the bonnet and writing on the boot, so why would I want to hand over my brand new vehicle to be driven 50 kilometres?

To avoid a potentially nasty incident I decided to drive my own vehicle to Strand and they made their driver available to bring my back home again. The car was at the panel shop for two days and the bonnet and boot lid have been restored.

BUT, what I noticed that afternoon is that the aluminium finish just in front of the center console now has a small scratch and dent. I haven't taken this up with Auric Auto yet as I am dangerously close to loosing it with them. Oh yes, and the bonnet is not aligned again since the BMW approved panel shop probably removed it for the respray.

This whole situation has been very unpleasant and I am extremely disappointed by the level of workmanship delivered by Auric Auto. Due to what they caused I didn't have a car for two days, drove out my own petrol to Strand and back, put extra kilometres on the car and endured a lot of frustration.

I am not one to go round bad mouthing people and at the same time feel it is my duty to inform my fellow forum members of my experience with this particular garage. I have heard good things about SMG near Canal Walk and Auto Atlantic in town and am hopeful that one of them will provide me with a better experience.

Ps. If anyone knows who I can refer this matter to at BMW SA, please PM me their details? I don't want to raise this with first line staff who don't have the authority to make decisions.
