Dear fanatics, after driving my 2015 stock 330d, I noticed a very foul eggy smell. The smell is unbearable and my luggage in the boot was smelling. The small can be felt 15 meters away from the car. Car is driving really well with full power. What could be causing this? Mileage is 71k.

Your catalytic converter is probably clogged

Thanks for the quick response. How do I unclog it?

U don't, u take it out.

It will release the sad torque gremlins that are trapped

By taking it out you mean replacing or deleting? You mean there will be more torque once it is removed or replaced? Car still has few months on motorplan. Looking forward to your response.

If you still have Motorplan... You should take the car in for them to identify the issue... Which is likely the cat... Generally bmw will replace the whole front section of the exhaust... Or the entire system

Either way... This is something that Motorplan must resolve.

which brand of diesel are you using? I would book the car in and let the dealership sort the issue out if motor plan is still active

Thanks. I still have a few months on motorplan so I will book it in for Tuesday. Sounds like it's expensive to fix.

Out of plan, fit a downpipe, no restrictions, better exhaust tone and slightly more response.

Thanks for this suggestion. Doesn't the downpipe have negatives e.g. higher fuel consumption and less engine/turbo reliability?

I use 50p. Where I stay they only sell 50p. There is nothing better available in my town.

I had this issue on mine, dealer changed something and it was fine after

I just wonder what was replaced. Some are saying it can be the whole exhaust system? How long did your car spend at the dealer?

Sulphur build up in Cat, have you changed the Diesel filter?

Im not sure. The car has always been serviced by the dealer since it's still under motorplan. I actually doubt it was ever changed. Car is due for service in 2-3k kilometers. Is there a way to check?

Keep us posted what they find and what they replace
Hi, sure I will keep you guys posted. I haven't been to the dealer yet. The car has not generated that terrible smell since that day. It's been more than a week now and I have driven it hard a few times. No obvious loss of power or increased consumption. Consumption is steady at 8.0 l/100k according to the computer. Cheers

Foul eggy smell is the cat but then again, these cars can do a regen when you drive it hard and clear it up and it will be fine again. Report it anyway to the dealer and let them have a look and when motorplan is done, remove it and get a downpipe fitted. No issues or gremlins again except torque gremlins ha ha ha!

Thanks a lot Ash. I was under the impression that local 330ds do not do a regeneration? Is that correct? Nonetheless I will take it to the dealer soon.
I have been schooled about the mechanical and power benefits of getting a downpipe and maybe after MP expires I will go for it.
