Hi Guys,

i searched the site and couldnt find anything where these 2 where compared.

Im looking to get a BMW m performance edition but not sure which engine type. some of the sellers are saying that the 320i is problematic bla bla bla.

I just want to know from you guys what to look for etc.

Thanks in advance.

Most forum members will say go for the 20d and for good reason. Ample power, great reliability and fuel consumption is quite low. Diesels are not as fun to rev out as a petrol but they'll definitely put a smile on your face

Hi Smoked. Follow the advice given above. The 320d is the car to buy, especially because of the engine reliability issues of the N20 engine. The N47 in the 20d has been very reliable from what I have seen. The cars make the same power but the diesel has significantly more torque and after owning an f30 330d, I can tell you that torque can be addictive. Good luck with the search.

Hi bud. Yes the 320i with the N20 motor is noted for timing chain failure and turbo issues, some threads can be found on the forum detailing issues members had even on the most well maintained cars. The facelift F30 came with the B48 motor which seemed to be better than the N20 but still some reports of failures.

The 320d on the other hand is noted for being bulletproof when maintained well. It is also more powerful and economical than a 320i so it is the obvious choice!
