Hi Guys,

Help needed please

I am considering buying a 2013 F30 320i
I spoke to the people at bmw regarding comments on the vehicle and i was told the only comment on the system is the client had to replace the engine control unit but that comment was listed in 2013

The car has 100 000km now and just got out of motorplan and drives and feels 100 percent, only issue i could pick up was the start stop seemed like it was not working it just gave the picture on the display with a line through it other than that everything works fine and it shows all the checks to be ok

Any advice will be highly appreciated as i plan on purchasing the vehicle

Thanks

Regarding the start stop picture with the line through it - it disables itself according to factors like the angle of incline the car is at, sport mode, etc. It only works in comfort and Eco pro mode, and car mustn't be on an incline etc

I would stress about the fact that the car had an ecu replaced. It's no different than any other electronics that might have required replacement. These ECUs don't break for no reason and are very reliable, especially the ones on the F cars.

The most probable reason it needed replacement is that the dealer bricked it when doing routine programming on the car. Yes, it happens very often.

I am pretty sure that the stop and start works on an incline as well.

Maybe it was disabled due to the ECU change and needed to be reprogrammed or something.

Imo OP should look for an alternative, same model warranty.

If the incline/decline is greater than 12% then it won't work.

And a bunch of other factors.. Car is in sports mode, or driver not pressing the brake hard enough, moving the steering wheel, engine hasn't reached ideal operating temperature etc. Or the auto stop start was disabled using the on/off button. But then it wouldn't display that picture with the line through it.

The fact that the logo is displaying with the line through it leads me to believe it is programmed. I would hope when they replaced the ECU they would have edited the vehicle order (VO) string of the new ECU which would have coded all the options the car came with.

Regarding the cause of the replacement - it's possible the previous owner tuned the car (JB4 or the likes) and messed up his ECU requiring a replacement.

I wouldnt worry too much about the start stop. Mine stopped working for a while and then started working again. I actually dont like start/stop. Yes there are many factors that influence start/stop. The other issue that I had twice now is that the OBC says all 4 tyres are flat when they are not. It also fixes itself after a switch off.
