Thanks man!

Yeah, I believe so - would have opted to DIY it, but I heard that there have been several instances where the pump fails again not too long after replacement - so would not like to have to fork out $$$ again for another pump. Rather have BMW warranty in place... so getting the dealer to do this one... for some sort of peace of mind...

By the way - THANK YOU @Spiro and Richard H for taking my call on Sunday and helping with advice. It is much appreciated! I owe you guys some beers...

yeah just check with them but if they didnt do the installation then i doubt you gonna get much assistance on warranty claims from them.

Bummer, sorry to hear. Also replace the thermostat at the same time.

Note: thermostat is unique to the X3 35i, and the water pump is the same as other x35i’s

DIY isn’t too bad at all. Danny has also had some practice

Shot Gav. Yes, I'll definitely do the thermostat at the same time...

I can see that they worked on the car today (diagnostics) so should hear what the damage is going to be in the morning. Holding thumbs...

What were the symptoms? Overheating?
Also what BMW warranty do you have? Sure it will cover these items?

What I meant was - if BMW does the fix now - and something goes wrong, they should repair as there would be a warranty for the fix. If I were to DIY, and something goes wrong with the pump, I would have to fork out again!

Sh*t... so I got the diagnostic back from BMW...

And according to them - the alternator is stuffed - hence caused the water pump to be affected... all to be fixed for the pricely sum of R36.6k...

So, my question to you great guys is:

1. The alternator - with these alternators - can I opt for getting it reconditioned? or any leads on where best to get a much better price on these? They want to charge R13k plus R1.6 to fit.

2. The water pump - I thought BMW was having a special? Northcliff BMW doesn't seem to have knowledge of this? They want to charge R8k plus R1.9 to fit.

Amongst other 'sundries'...

Thanks guys in advance for your help!!

Does anyone have a service guide of which items needs to be serviced? Especially after 100K km

I don't have a guide. Should actually look into getting a list going.
What I have been warned about is the auto box - and to do an oil change (ZF).

Hectic sum of repairs. Luckily you got waranty cover. The alternator and waterpump failure at once is a bit strange.

I have read somewhere that ZF recommends changing at 100K km. It is def important to change the filter as well. I will ask n guy i know on monday for more details.

Do you know when we need to change diff and transfer case oils?

A further quick update...

Yesterday I took ZF up on their fanatics deal... of a gearbox oil change and diagnostic... (R3k)...

Hardus was great - and took his time to explain all the stuff he was doing to me.

The Good:

The gearbox oil seemed fairly healthy, and although some of the clutch readings were close to spec or just out of spec, they largely ok.

The Bad:

The transfer case definitely needs some work, and so I will book her in in January for a recon/fix (R~8.5k)

Also, looks like the front propshaft is throwing a little bit of grease. Need to have that looked at soon...

I decided not to add a selfie of myself....

So, the fun with the X3 continues...

I was checking out the Carly and wanted to see what was available in the new version of the app... only to find these codes:

img_7518_8304979181.png

So, seeing as the water pump was recently installed by BMW and has a Warranty, I thought let me check in with them to see what the issue is...

Below are the contents of the correspondence...

Message 1:

"Hi xxx,

I hope that you are keeping well?

Please see the attached. It looks like there are some issues with the new water pump. I am not sure if the error codes were cleared when the install was done?

The car is running fine, and there are no issues - other than the error codes which are persistent.

Can we please make a plan for the car to come in and be checked under the pump warranty? What day next week can we try?

Many thanks.

Regards,

Pete"

Response 1:

"What is your registration?"

Message 2: = Registration provided...

Response 2:

"So it is still showing Coolant pump faults?"

Message 3:

"Hi xxx,

Yes, it looks like it is showing no communication to the pump as you can see, but everything is working fine.

I am not sure if this is just a bad connection on the pump, or that the faults weren't cleared when the work was done, or if there is a problem with the actual pump?

The car is behaving just fine and there are no issues - other than these codes when you check them.

Make sense?

Pete"

Response 3:

"My foreman says the car will overheat if the water pump is faulty and those codes are not from a BMW approved machine they can be bogus faults and I can book you in so they can check but there will be diagnosis charge of R1800. Thank you"

Message 4:

"Hi xxx,

Let me just understand...

You want to charge R1,800 for a 5-10 minute check for something that was replaced and has a warranty on it? Is that correct?

You would rather that I ignore and leave it and possibly have a roadside failure on my holiday trip?

Is this what you are saying?

Regards,

Pete"

No further response as yet.

Am I being unreasonable - or is this just absolute sh*t service?

I am very annoyed at this interaction...

Yeah thats honestly kak, can you get the car read with INPA or ISTA-D? Those diagnostics will pull the "BMW Codes" they referring to.
