F25 X3 20d (2014) - end of motor plan

Hi All,

My 2014 X3 (F25) 20d is going to run out of motor plan in April 2019. I'd really appreciate some advice and suggestions on what the big ticket items are for this vehicle that will need to be replaced/serviced over the course of the next 1-3 years. Also, what should I definitely try to get inspected/replaced before the plan expires? The immediate things that come to mind are: brake discs, brake pads, rubber linings on door frame, shocks, wipers. Any other engine bits (belts, pulleys, gaskets, seals, filters, oil changes, etc), wear and tear items, or plastic bits, that I should be looking at?

The current mileage is just below 100 000km, and BMW quoted me R57k to extend the motor plan by another 1yr/20 000km! I almost had a heart attack when I got the email quote. Are any of the 3rd party motor plans like the one from Bosch any good?

Thanks!

Hi there. Have you owned the car from new?

For the purpose of my point I'm going to assume yes for now. My ownership of an F25 2.0d X3 is documented on the forum and I can only provide you my experience for what it's worth.

My car was serviced only by a BMW dealership with the exception of 1 oil service done at Leo Hasse Bosch service center. That was recorded in the supplementary service book.

When I did the same exercise as you are doing now I got a full motorplan print and the costs for all services and it worked out (from memory) at around 68 cents per km.

I did not extend my motorplan which was used up in 2yrs.... I lived 3 yrs and 170000km without plan. My service costs didn't change much.

Put away some money every month and drive the car sensibly and it will look after you. They are fantastic cars

Thank you!! Very useful!! I like the suggestion about getting a printout of the full motor plan to date and averaging the costs out (and normalising for unusual expenses). I bought the car as a demo from a dealership.

Mine was bought as a demo as well. Got it with 6k km on it.

As you can appreciate to have done 270k km in 5yrs meant a lot of long trips. Thus not much use of the brakes... In the time I owned it the brake rotors were changed twice. Pads only 5 times.

The car did not do stop start moms taxi type service and I believe that had a lot to do with the reliable outcome. Also I drove gently until warmed through. I don't think I revved it beyond 4k rpm ever. Cooled the turbo down after spirited runs. I really believe that these motors and drive trains are very well engineered

Not sure if I am used to the lighter 3 series, but in comparison the X3 chows disks and pads.

You are correct.

My rear brake pads were changed in feb last year and now again. I didn’t even complain, got an email from BMW stating I should take it in for replacement.

Yeah definitely. I feel I have to replace pads constantly. Im doing the front ones this weekend and I just did the rear ones in August. I see on the schedule it says I have 6k kms to go until I have to replace the rears as well.

When my MP expired i took out a 24month waranty plan for major components. Never needed or claimed from the waranty plan. I continued the regular services and do the normal wear & tear items. The X3 is still running without hiccups. They very reliable if looked after.

I am on 157,000km on my 2011 X3 F25 2.0D bought new. Changed gearbox oil at 120,000 with ZF in Germiston, unfortunately the Transfer case fluid could not be changed. Replaced shocks & shock mounts at 140,000km, and that made a huge difference on the ride and handling. Just did another service yesterday for oil and fuel filter and what I believe is 1st coolant flush since new. Sorted out my rear tailights under motorplan, haven't had issues since. Fixed my peeling glovebox myself with super glue.

Thanks for the input dude!

I had the timing belt replaced just before my M/plan ended this apparently is the only issue sometimes on these motors, it entails that the motor must be pulled however at dealer on the M/plan it was recorded at being around R16k.

Having said that knowing a friend of mine at dealer I "reamed" the M/plan and had every conceivable thing done before it ran out, so all the preventative maintenance taken care of at great costs :=):

I raised the issue of timing belt with my mate who is a BMW qualified tech but now builds Ford Ranger race trucks for Neil Woolridge motorsport in Pmb. He told me it's a timing chain not belt and that I never needed to be concerned about changing it.

I never bothered to question him further. So is it belt or chain? :fencelook:

It is a chain. I think some of the old E30 series cars last had a belt. There are some rumors about chains on certain 2l diesels breaking but i have not experienced it, fortunately. Been trying to get more info from the forum about people that have had chains breaking but seems few and far between.
