F20 120d vs 118i [both m-sport]

Hi guys

I would like your opinion please.

I have been driving diesels for the last 10 years, hence I am more fond of them naturally, a bit biased I might say :).

I used to drive the f20 118d in germany - loved the car - but it was a tat weak to my liking.

So I thought about the 120d back in SA, but I cant justify 420k on that car.

Hence I saw a 118i - better sepc - for 380k.

What is their real life fuel consumption of the 118i? Is is powerful enough?

I know the 120d would have the power - am just a bit skeptical about the 118i [I dont know much about the petrols you see].

I also saw a 2011 model 120d coupe - which makes me think between these three.

Any opinions, persuasion, and real life figures of the 118i fuel consumption would be appreciated.

Regards

M

My wife drives the F20 118.
The auto 8 speed is a must on these cars. The gearbox is what makes the "smaller" turbo engines magic. The car is much stronger than the older non turbo donkey e82 118.
Its a pleasure to drive and definitely not a slow coach. Town driving is between 7.9-8.2 L/100km in JHB.
Highway will be around 5.3

I'd rule out the 120d coupe personally first because the new generation interior is so much better.

The 118i is a really nice car, suppose you can work out on your predicted mileage if the fuel saving of the 120d over the life of the car will pay for the difference in purchase price, if you use the claimed fuel consumption figures (which are generally unachievable but at least a consistent starting point between models).

And I would second the suggestion that the 8 speed auto is a must, Really is a fantastic box!

The 8-Speed really does help smaller turbo engines stay within their power band, I don't think you would be dissatisfied with the 118i at all. I myself would love to have one, especially in M-Sport guise...if cost was taken out of consideration I would go for the 120d.

The base price of the F20 120D is about R350K, Is the M sport taking it up to R420K?

I test drove the 118i last year but decided on a bit lower spec 120d.Chose the 120d as I do about 25000km per year, so also saving about R10K per year on fuel.

makes sense with the amount of KM that you drive, thats my main concern as well if I look at the 118i or 125i. As I do drive quite often long distances to go to cape town, or wherever [450km plus].

Even though I would love the petrol I am weary of the petrol $$$

I have done 13000km in a F20 125i and average fuel economy, well according to the car computer anyway, is 8.8l/100km and i do mostly short trips around Jhb only 5km from home to work and on long trips it does around 6.3. 118i will non match the 120d, but it will do quite well.

If you are considering spending over 400k, why not look at a F30 320D with like 10,000km/low mileage on the clock. Resale would be great on this car and you can pick up a 2013 Msport 320D with low mileage for around 430/440.

Yeah, when you hitting R380K-R420K mark you probably need to get the most amount of car for money, and that is slap bang in demo F30 territory.........................so I'd say say skip the F20 and go F30

The cars are aimed at different markets, so depends on what your needs are as the F30 has more space, comfort, but an F20 is more fun to drive, with similar power and less weight.

Its also important to watch the options cost on any model (F20 or F30) as this can easily change any comparison between cars.

My wife has the 118i with the 8 speed auto gearbox, the car has more than enough power, and if driven in eco pro, excellent fuel consumption

I say save the money and go for the 118i:=):

Yeah, but its easy to get carried away with new car prices, and sometimes one just needs to sit down and do the sanity checks,
like essentially paying nearly R400K for not the best looking 5dr hatch
on the road when their are others in the hatch market at different prices.

Essentially why spend R400K on F20 when the F30 is also a decent drive and looks better.

I went through the F20 vs F30 dilemma big time. I originally planned to get a 328i, so I went through to the dealership and they'd just received their first M-sport models and 125i's, they were launched together. Anyway I saw an estoril blue 125i M-sport on the floor and properly fell in love.:inlove:

So after a couple test drives of 1 series, and quite a bit of time spent driving F30 320i rental cars I decided to go for the 1. I decided to put the decision on ice until the M-sport came out on the 3, a flipping awesome package I must say! Wish the 1 series came with that steering wheel. But still, my decision stood. Reason is by the time I hit say 30 years old, I probably wont want to drive a hatch any more, so I'll wind up with a 3 series or similar anyway at that point, might as well enjoy a 1 while I'm still in that zone. (Which is not to say the 1 series has an age limit, it's just more of personal mindset)

The 1 series is a very different car to the 3. It has the same quality of interior, making it quite expensive for a hatch admittedly, but a very premium product. It smaller and feels "tighter" and more focused. The 3 is a better all rounder, all that engineering packed into a better sized package, rather than crammed into a small package makes more sense.

But the 3 series just doesn't engage with me like the 1 series does. To go back to real drivers cars roots, the 1 series is almost identical in size to the E30, while a 3 is at least as big as an E34.

But I guess you need to decide if you looking for the most amount of bmw for your money, or if the 1 series with its distinct character and personality is what you really looking for. A lot of people probably just buy it cause of the badge, but it offers so much more than being another generic hatch with a different badge on it.

I must say the new 1 series F20 in the back space wise is for me identical to the 3 series F30 in the rear.
F30 is also tiny in the back.
