Being a 2015 it could be pre or post Lci whereas the 2012 is definitely pre-Lci...

I have 118i pre-Lci model and it has had it's fair share of visits to the dealers. Turbo, water pump, injector clear, gearbox software and then a number of things non-engine related.

My sister in-law has a post-Lci 118i (neither of ours are M-Sport) and her car has spent more time at the dealers in 30000km than mine has in 120000km but I am convinced she has a lemon or drives badly. My personal view on the newer engine is stay away!! It is 25% lower on power which means you have to push it harder and you can see that in the consumption figures and it is very noticeable when driving.

Re the Diesel... I can not speak for the reliability of the this particular engine but know with a number of Diesels I have had and still have... I would be very hesitant to buy one that is beyond 50 000km at most and still under motor plan. A badly maintained / cared for Diesel is going to cost you... injectors normally go between 100 and 150 000km if they have not been cared for and are seriously expensive!! If cared for and driven nicely / like a diesel should be and not a petrol, they are normally bulletproof.

Personally, I would drive both but if you concerned on budget and don't know the history / previous owner of the 120d... I would think twice as a BMW history, just means it visits the dealership when the computer says so and for what it tells them to do and nothing more!!

:sorry: dude - you are far from the truth I too have had almost 10 Diesels and all of them except for one that was stolen have zoomed past 180k without any engine issues only wear and tear items as suspension parts.
I drive My Audi Tdi like a race car every day of the past 10 years now...stop jump out and zoom off the second I start it...she gives my nothing but awesome service, not missed a beat. In fact I have only just replaced the belt at 160k and it was still in perfect condition.

MikeR... Once again, I have been mis-understood... I opened by saying firstly, I cant speak for this engine... Secondly, I said a poorly cared for diesel can lead to expensive problems.

If you read the other post of mine, you would have seen I have 2 Toyota Diesels which are both well into the 200k range. Having owned this vehicles from new they have not skipped a beat. With the E90 purchased second hand, we had issues due to the previous owner(s) most likely. With our LR4 we are having issues due to poor quality Diesel. All of these back your experience, mine and the others commenting on this post... Service your care properly and it will serve you well. Treat it badly (dirty fuel, poor servicing ect) and you will have issues

@FerdiBotha... I have started using one on my 118i and it worked like a bomb... SMG in Century City laughed at me when they serviced the car shortly after but they did thank me from saving them from having clean them :) Any product / brand recommendations for the LR4 Diesel?

I normally use Wynn's Diesel Injector and Turbo cleaner. I can't really comment on how good it works, but I can say that I haven't had any injector issues since using it. It's around R70 a bottle which covers a whole tank and is recommended every 5000km.

I use the Wynn's one specifically because it's readily available, but I'm sure there could be better or similar products out there.

I have owned a 118i since late 2013 until April this year. Covered 97000km with zero problems. They are good cars believe me when I say that. As long as you take care of them. But the torque on the 20d is second to none....

I must say, thanks to everyone for the wealth of information! It has been a real help.

Sadly, someone else managed to hand in an OPT on the 120d before me, which was successful. I didn't manage to test drive it wither, which is a real pity. I have decided that I will go for a 120d - but decent low-mileage ones are quite scarce. As soon as a good one comes along, I'm going to snatch it up.
