I love the M brand. Always will but I've got to say that the days when the Ms had no equal are no longer. Disappointing to see the latest M edition getting away from Merc's new CLS63 off the line and then being hauled in fairly easily. Wouldn't have happened 20 years ago

eh? where did you see this?

Ah, I found it, car mag. Am pretty sure that is the PP Merc, although they claim its not. Yeah right :)

Seen quite a few reports - all with the same result. M5s launch is way better and it's handling, marginally so, but beyond that the CLS is unstoppable. Check out this months issue of Cars in Action. You can also see the video clip of the Car Mag shootout on you tube Get a load of this though: Kleemann are offering a software upgrade on the new 5.5l Merc motor for around R10,000 which bumps the power up to 690hp and 950nm. They rave about the motor and its tuning potential. Merc has really raised the bar and BMW IMO is battling to keep pace

Hear we go again... :nonono:

I am terribly sorry, but you do not drive in quarter miles with perfect tar, perfect leveling and no wind in the real world.

Who gives a flying feck about whether an AMG caught up with it in a straight line. Just because a Bugatti Veyron can outrun a jet doesnt mean the jet is a better daily drive, with more personality and soul and passion.

This mindset that unless its fastest in a straight line makes it less of a car really annoys me because it is simply marketing bull from tuners (no names mentioned) who live life one quarter mile at a time breaking records with .2 seconds cos that makes all the difference in the carpark at Makro.

The M5 is a masterpiece of subtle beauty, performance that is mind blowing by any standard and value that is unrivaled. Who cares if the Merc goes faster - You are in a BMW developed by some of the best engineers in the world.

Who cares if a Merc is faster? Who cares if the Merc looks better? Or handles better? We are BMW Fanatics because we love BMW.

This isnt aimed at you AJM, its just a trend I have noticed and I think it is pathetic that people put cars down because one is slower in a straight line or has less torks or didnt get a good review in CAR Magazine which btw is the biggest pile of dirt on the shelves.

/Rant Over

To each his own Mike. In case you don't know, the Merc was only 0.3 sec slower than the M5 around Kyalami. Anyway I certainly have no desire to sell my views. I'm merely expressing them. They aren't gospel. I'm sure the M5 is an awesome car. I for one though don't exploit my cars around a race track and yes, straight line grunt is NB to me

The M5 does 0-200km/h in 12.5sec
The CLS AMG does it in 15.2sec
The CLS AMG PP does it in 13.5sec

When they crossed the beacon, it was around 19 seconds.

The M5 is limited to 250km/h
The AMG is limited to 250km/h
The AMG PP is up to 300km/h

The E63 AMG has the exact same power as the CLS
The E63 AMG has the exact same torque as the CLS
The E63 AMG weighs 225kgs less than the CLS
The E63 AMG loses in every discipline to the M5

Yet, the CLS63 in this video beats the M5??

I am sceptical of that video. Something, somewhere is not right I am afraid.

Shit, don't know how I managed to interweave my response. Anyway, here's what i intended:

They aren't gospel. You should try not to allow them to evoke such emotion. I'm sure the M5 is an awesome car. I fully understand AJM, and expressing views is what a forum is about.

I personally am not even a huge BMW Fan, I love Smart Cars and Alfa's and pretty much all the underdogs. So I wouldnt say it evokes emotion but rather annoyance.

Look at MINI, its an overpriced, poorly built, un-practical and silly car. Yet people buy them like loaves of bread because it has that something special. BMW has been making special M cars for a long time now - I dont get that impression from a Merc.

I get agitated when people use performance figures, straight line speed, quarter mile times etc to validate the worth of what is an exceptional car.

I understand you want the extra straight line performance, but surely you wont buy the Merc for the .3 or whatever it is seconds it is faster by?

Of course not so why even go there? I firmly believe its the tuning crowd which is to blame for this nonsense.

You right. A staight-line perfomance advantage, in and of itself, would not secure my money. I can tell you though that I spent quite a bit of time driving the new CLS63 PP about two weeks ago and it is mind-blowing all-round. So if I was in the M5/CLS market (which regrettably I'm not) and the only significant edge that one has over the other is straight line performance, I'd opt for that one - but that's just me:=):

Then in theory you should go for the M5 as its faster in a straight line unless you going over 250km/h when the limiter kicks in but not on the AMG PP:rollsmile:

In theory and in reality I'd go for the M5 on those figures, all else being equal, but I'm pretty confident those figures are incorrect:=):

That's why I say something is not right. Personally I think that it was the AMG PP in the video, I don't think either car was driven as well as can be, and the AMG only passed the M5 closer to 250km/h if not over. In which case, on the road, the M5 will win 9/10 staright line duels against the AMG and AMG PP. The figures I got were from another car magazine.

This thread has caught my interest as you may have already noticed :)

some more facts:
As already mentioned, the CLS63AMG weighs over 200kgs more than the E63 AMG - FACT

Yet look what the M5 does to that E63, also FACT

The above footage is consistent with the figures I posted. So the carmag.co.za video makes no sense at all.

The defense rests Your Honour!

I just don't understand why they are comparing the M5 to the CLS63, when Merc have a E63, which is the car they should be comparing. Wait for the new M6, with the "PP", if you can call it that, and them compare it to the CLS63.
