Hi gents ....so i recently aquired a E46 318i auto with the M43 engine and although it was a good buy i discovered that the cars engine was a goner as i was hoping to revive this motor .So anyway after trying to source another motor i soon realised that they dont come cheap so someone i know had a E36 ,M43 engine to an essentially they are very similiar an i easy fit .So i have shifted the crank sensor an used all the original intakes an plugs an so far so good ................However when i tried to start it doesnt give any spark .....any advice on the way forward .....

Have you checked the coil pack?
is the coils plugged into the correct sequence?

Try and start here:

FYI i am no mechanic i just have a similar motor in my E36 :tiptoe:

If I remember correctly that there is a impulse gear on the crank on the e46 crank and not the e36, just take the sensor out of the block and double check that the gear is there, you should be able to see it through the hole. I might be wrong but without this it will never start,
no 8 on the picture below.

i have moved the original sensor to where the e36 engine tdc sensor is located( at the front beneath the pulley),,,and with both original e46 an E36 sensors in place still had no spark .....
Is there a sure way to check the coil pack......
An i think ill check if No9 is present on the E36 gear aswell as its external an cant recall seeing any :smashScreen::smashScreen:,,,,,,,unless its jus magnetic

Hi,

I needs the gear for the reference, if you crank the motor does the fuel pump engage, if not this may be and indication that there is no speed signal. If you can get some one to connect diagnostic machine this would also speed up your search.

Fuel pump does engage as threis fuel pressure on the rail ....the injectors however has no pulse ,,,,,
As i said its the complete e36 motor and with the e46 electronics ,,,could the igniition timing be adjusted on the ecu

An all the diagnostic ppl are closing for the next few days so ill pursue any educated advice ill get :coolShake:
