Engine Swap - (E46) From Diesel to Petrol

Its me again..

:fencelook:

It is impossible to change from a diesel engine to petrol engine.

Friend of mine is having major issues with his 320D E46. Current Mileage on the car is around 200K plus. He is thinking of transplanting a petrol engine in his 320D E46. In other words, he wants to buy an e46 petrol engine and replace the diesel engine.

Not sure if this is possible, can this be done? or maybe he is just better off selling the car and getting an E46 320i..

Google brings up the other way round - From Petrol to Diesel -

Sell it and buy a petrol.

Don't even think of it again.

He will have to pretty much change everything except the body and the seats. Oh and the lights.

If you going to do it then do it with something like a V8 or something special..

No point in doing it for a 320i, as you can just buy that.

But a E46 with a E39 5.0 V8 would be awesome

Its really not gonna be worth it at all.You will have to pretty much change everything on it mechanical and electric wise.He should just fix the Diesel up and sell it if he's not happy with it

It's not as easy as just swapping the motor... you'll need to change the DME, gearbox and diff just to mention a few things as well.
It will be easier and cheaper to buy a 320i

Absolutely possible, sensible... not a sausage...

You would have to do engine, EWS, keys, and most importantly, wiring harness. and bucket loads of coding, this job is not for the faint hearted..

Getting everything working, communicating ect could be a problem.

I would be able to do this for you, but bring about 50k for the conversion and I will do it with pleasure.

Now take that 50k in your equasion, and you will see that it makes so much more sense just to buy a complete car.

Certainly not worth it.

Best bet is to sell and get another car, or go all out and fit a 330i engine(no need to change drivetrain tunnel)... Or go crazy and plug a V8 in there.. BMW of course.

can slap a lexus v8 in there for around R45k.

and its a cheap engine to replace should anything go wrong in the future.
only thing that wont work is the economy meter.

pm if interrested.
im rolling in a lexus powered e30 thats covered 85 000km with no issues...

returns 9.5km/l in town driving like a loon
and
returns 11km/l on the open road, averaging between 140 - 160kph fully loaded.
