Engine Overhaul E90

Hi there All

I have a BMW 320i E90 2006, took the car to BMW in March as they said the CAM shaft sensor had gone, 3 months later car not driving properly and using oil. Took it to them and they say i need a new engine. The car has 134 000kms

Can anyone help !

I have spoken to BMW SA they are not interested as after the car was out of warranty i took i to a "non approved" BMW guy for a service.

BM SA claims that he could have used the wrong oil etc, which is not the case as I got the oil.

But in any event I think its just a cover up so they dont have to take responsibility, by them saying that then they must have proof that for the other 5 years they serviced it the engine was fine, we will see.

But can anyone give me the name of a decent place where the engine can be checked out properly and does anyone know if these engines can be overhauled and by who ? I am in Cape Town

Your Help will be appreciated.

Try Mech 5 in the city just off Roeland St. The n46 motors do need valve guides and seals as they get older - thus causing them to be heavy on oil. Speak to Mike Bridge.

how bad is it? wont it just be easier to sell an buy something else... spending alot on the engine just does not seem like it will be worth it...

Sorry to hear about your experience, but that model car is nothing but trouble.
Fix it and get rid of it would be my best advice for you. Everyone I know who's had it tells me it never ends well with that car:thumbdo:
Firstly I'd say check which option is cheaper -and overhaul that you're seeking or swapping if for a reconditioned or rebuilt one.

To see more about the troubles of that engine, log into https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/bmw/3-series-e90-2005/

Yeah read's like Tolstoy's "War and Peace" unfortunately, but you'll see just what a nightmare it will become if you keep it.
I had an E90 320i from new back in 2006- was well behaved till i sold it 3 years later with 35k on the clock. They were new at the time so all these issues were discovered in the succeeding years. I was very lucky.
I swear by the E46 straight sixes- they never disappoint
