Engine mounts

Hi guys....

Just a bit curious... Why does the e46 engine mounts have vacuum pipes going into it? The mounts dont look like they Actively move firstly and secondly there is a control valve in the mix as well...

Have a look at ffg link on real oem, Parts 7,8,12 especially...

Lastly would a leak in these vacum pipes affect performance etc?

I don't think the petrol engine has them. It is actually a very complicated mount with some valves and fluid inside. The vacuum lines can control the valves and in that way control the characteristics of the mount. So you can have a nice and soft mount while you are idling at the robot, but a stiffer one when you flooring it. All about comfort and vibration transmission.
