Hey Guys,
I have the 1996 E36 318is with the engine damaged. I have now found the E36 318is 1999 model engine. The seller says it is the same engine in the G-string shaped BMW.

My question is: will the ecu in car work with this engine? Will there be a need for other modifications.

Please note that I also have the transponder keys and ECU for the engine I am buying!

Please help

By G-string do you mean e46 ?

Yip G-string is E46...LOL

Im not sure but i though that the 318i in the E36 was different from the engine in the 318i in the E46???

Any1 know?

Guys I'm abit in the dark on these things!!
Let me explain!! Both these cars are E36 318is( dolphin Shaped)
His engine is totally different to my own. He says its cos his one is the 1999 model and mine is 1996 model.

I want to know that if I buy his engine will it work on my car?
Will I need to install his ecu into my car?
Will I need to change the locksets aswell?
What does one mean when they say I will have to remap the ecu?
Will I need any remaping.

I hope I am making sense :)

This sounds very peculiar. If it is a 1999 E36 318iS and yours is a 1996 318iS then the engines should be exactly the same. Can you post pictures, as it could be that your 1996 car is maybe not a 318iS or he is not correct about his car.

318is was manufactured between 96 - 99 and had 1.9 liter 4 cylinder engines. 2 of my uncles owned a 318is, 1 had a 96 somoa blue and the other a 99 alpine white and both cars have the same engine.

It seems like he got a pre face lift e46 engine in that car or as Solo Man mentioned, your car probably isn't an "is"

The key's and transponder is not goint to work, neither is the donar ECU. So the lockset you can sell onwards again, or bin it, not that its a major issue anyway, as bypassing the transponder on one of these is like Julias being stupid... way too easy, yet criminal at the same time...

Will the engine's fit, well there was 2 used, the M42B18 and the M44B19 in the E36 318is, while the E46 took a M43 in the early 318's.

So, using his ECU is not an option unless you go aftermarket management...

I doubt this is going to work bud, maybe the bottom ends are compatible, and perhaps it is possible to make this work, but off the bat straight fitment, no..
