Engine Coolant: 335i

As I was driving home, about 5km to my house I get a warning "Engine Coolant too low". There was no prior warning whatsoever. So I decided to drive safely home and check it. As I drive in, switched off the car, there is hiss sound coming from engine compartment and little smoke/vapor like.

First it was the "Engine Failure: Reduced Power" last month and now this? What should I be doing? Call BMW Assist? Could the coolant be leaking somehow ?

well I am assuming its the E9? series in which case bleeding is quite an involved process.I think you may need to get it to a specialist to do it for you however I will ask a friend knows more about bleeding E9?s than I do :thumbsup:

Anything that vaguely resembles smoke/vapor coming from the engine bay should be checked out urgently. And dont move the car. Get BMW assist to check (or tow) the car at your house. One of our forum members had a smoke/vapour smell from under the hood a couple of weeks ago and the only advise I could give was dont drive the car...let it be checked asap and in his case it was an actual electrical burn that could have been worse if he did not had it checked.

And that hissing sound....could be a snake...dont open the hood...

hahahaha...I just called BMW Assist. Just like u said, the technician suggested we dont take chances as it could be a leak. They bringing a flatbed truck to take her away, she wont be sleeping home tonight :bawling:...They also organizing a loan car to be delivered at my house :clap:. The loaner is only for 24hrs though!

Update: Loan car is already here...320d..still waiting for tow truck! :thumb:

This is a coincidence, my 335i also had to be towed in yesterday because it was leaking radiator fluid. Was driving the car on Friday and noticed the gauge starting to edge past the 130+ mark with normal driving? Parked the car over night and no water was visible, but when I reversed on Sat morning noticed green fluid leaking out at the right side of the engine bay cover underneath? Think it may be the water pump or thermostat? Have just bought the car secondhand and was initially concerned when it got to 130 a couple of weeks ago while driving slowly, took it to the dealer and they said this was normal?? On my 135i I only managed to get up to the 130 mark under really hard driving? Car is 100% stock.

Over heating seems to be an issue with the 335 with the recent posts. Maybe the pressure and heat in the system is to high for the material to withstand.:dunno:

I just picked up the car from Clearwater BMW and all is good so far. :thumb:

I was told there was a campaign on the 335i and so they checked 10 other things. Something to do with radiator pressure, coolant, heat, and software re-programming. I will try get a clearer picture tomorrow on what was exactly done.

I see the guys at Clearwater BMW removed "Sandton Auto" sticker and replaced it with "Clearwater BMW" ...

Eish...what is next on these cars. I have never had a water overheating or coolant/heating issues (yet) for 2 years. I installed an IC soon after buying the car and together with the oil cooler & meth they have been doing their job. I did however had an (oil) overheat issue when running with Nitrous but this happened only when running serious boost levels on the dyno. The only way to overcome this was to lower the boost and or to get an upgraded oil cooler for long term purposes. But I have not yet done so, because for normal driving and on the track the car oil & water temps were in range. :thumb:

Thanks for your input guys. I hope the software programming will sort out the occasional "Engine Fault:Reduced Power" error..Will keep you posted.

I heard from the service assistance at Clearwater BMW there was a 335i campaign from BMW SA to dealers to upgrade software on certain control units. Unfortunately I couldn’t get more information on that. She said nothing was necessary wrong with those control units. :thinking: The other work done on my car was:

- Fix leaking radiator cap
- Fix bleeding screw :dropjaw:
- Coolant topped

Took my e92 335 for spin this afternoon. On my way home engine temp was climbi.g to 120, thought nothing of it as i was driving hard. Anyways, just went into the garage and the floor is flooded with coolant. Put the key, said 'coolant low'.

Called BMW assist, said, i should top up coolant and drive to the neareat dealer....should i be driving the car?...btw, its a 335i, 06. Car has an extended plan so hope dey will sort it

Dont drive it. Coolant may be empty by the time you get to BMW. They must come fetch the car. :thumbs:

There are quiet a few cheap plastic parts such as piping, caps, connections on the e90 models. Sooner or later it will have to be replaced. I replaced quite a few of the cheap bits on my car with aftermarket piping/parts. Intercooler connections, chargepipes and boost tubing are the most vulnerable.

Soooo, the dealers claim the water leak was due to the expansion tank being cracked, car should be sorted by the weekend....I also use to hear a whistling sound, they adjusted the turbo's for that....cant wait to have my baby back, life aint the same in a 1,6
