Ok, so the engine has to come out!
So, like a novice, I was thinking it could be done from under he car like the E46 M3..

Massive job, respect.

Gert,

Just put the oil filter cap back on and cover those TB's.

Just incase.
Condoms work well, don't ask me how I know that. :fencelook:

Gert, its nice to see it uses a M50/54 water pump, so much better that those garbage electric water pumps BMW have been fitting on E90 non-M models and onwards.

I also thought the crossmember could be removed and the bearings changed from underneath.

Unless Gert is plotting something much bigger than a bearing replacement :mmm:

Yup, you can do it from the bottom.

But then you need a lift, which I don't have. As you can see the whole subframe needs to come out, and the power steering.

I also want to remove the transmission as one with the engine, for fear of damaging a R22k DMF. That the main reason I'm doing it this way.

Truth be told, if I had space for a lift it would've been in already. But unfortunately my garage roof isn't high enough for one.

It's for this reason I'm looking at extensions to the house to allow for it.

*Whew*

Zorst is out, Propshaft is loose and all wiring is now loose. I just have to go over it all to make sure I've got it all then we can pull the motor.

I've also been testing some new Nitrile gloves I want to sell in the shop. I'm getting tired of hands that never come clean...

This is what they look like after the whole morning's work. They're super thin but durable and I've not been gentle. Only one little tear that I got when the glove hooked onto a sharp piece of heat shield. Colour me impressed :)

Looks good Gert, hope you don't have spare bolts when you put it back, I always seem to have that issue, and I'm quite good with taking things apart.

Thanks man. Yes what I'd do is to put all screws from an area of the car in their own box. That way, if I have screws over I know where to go check for missed spots ;)

Judging by the work you have done am sure you won't have this issue. Keep the posts coming... Starting to my my V8 more and more.

best trick i have learnt over the years, with regards to bolts

After you have stripped something off, 9 times out of 10 the part can be removed and the screw/bolt goes back in its original location right there and then.
