I just had a mini heart attack thinking of how you are going to get that back in there :dropjaw:

All the best for the next stage of this "build", it will be amazing :)

Thanks man. Actually it come out pretty easy. So it will go back easy. The tough part will be hooking everything back up again, as every bolt has a different torque setting :blueCry:

Hahaha.

I can recommend doing the bearings from the bottom as well. I had many other reasons for doing this, although in hind sight they don't seem so important anymore :roflol:

Peter came to visit tonight, so the sump came off and we got the first glimpse of the insides this evening. And I was stunned at how good this 100k km motor looked inside. It just goes to show what's possible if you're following a strict flush and oil regime.

This motor had 1l ATF added to the oil prior to its last service that was 4000km ago. It ran this for 200km and then the oil was replaced. Since then I've been running 0W40 LM oil in the car.

And now for the part that I didn't expect...

Lucky the crank still looks fine

This is only cylinder 7 and 8's bearings removed. We will remove the rest tomorrow evening.

To say I was surprised by what the bearings looked like is an understatement, and Peter is of the opinion that some of the rest might even look worse.

For those that still believe that this is all a storm in a teacup, I urge you to get it done. Looking at the condition of these bearings I can't imagine I would've had too many more miles on this motor. And it's not that this motor is sick, I've got Dyno results that prove it's still healthy.

The point is that you don't know till you check it out - and I would check it out if I'm over the 80k km mark. It's a relatively cheap thing to replace, when compared to replacing the motor and all the pain that that involves. I can just thank my lucky stars that I intended to do this since I decided I'm getting an M3.

Get.It.Done. That is all...

Go with WPC treated bearings. Thats what I am doing and there seems to be the same consensus on the US forums.

I think the US market is a good guideline as ALOT of them track their cars sometimes bi-monthly. So the cars are being punished

Same goes for the V10 guys.

Their engines uses the exact same big end bearings.

Same conrod, same stroke, same piston, same RPM limit...

Same conrod? That can't be right.
