Hi guys got a chirpy high pitched siren like noise on my E92 325i A/T, its been on and off for sometime i never got a chance to check it out had to work out of the country .... now my brother says that the sound is back however the noise goes away as you accelerate and it comes back on low rpm with a rough idle and the car stalls, any idea what it could be?

I had a whining noise on idle on my e90 330i , traced it to the filter housing area with one on these mechanic's stethoscopes . Turned out the oil filter collapsed . Replaced it and noise was gone . Car also stalled due to this for some reason

No problem.....forgot to mention that I also had vanos solenoid codes that was the reason for the engine stalling. Was stuck due to oil starvation from filter collapse. After the filter replacement I cleared the codes and took a spin in Sport mode. Codes never came back and stalling was gone too. Sinse issue I change filter every 5k km in between 10k km oil service with oem filter. Filter that collapsed was a GUD.

Yeah that makes sense a bud of mine put it on diagnostics it threw out those codes as well, and as far as i can recall i think my oil filter is GUD :thumbdo::thumbdo:.

Ill arrange with my brother to take my car out to a workshop and sort it out.

Oh another thing..... after researching a little yesterday.....another possible cause could be the water pump or idler pulley... but for the milleage im doing 157 XXXkm id rather change the pump, pulley & thermostat whilst im at it to be on the safe side.

Do you know if you're aware but the n52 engine doesn't have a belt driven water pump, it's electric. I have a suspicion it's that alternator's bearing or tensioner. You don't have to replace the whole alternator just the front bearing.

But you can test to see if it is the pulley or the belt by spraying water onto the belt. If it goes quite then it is the belt, if it doesn't go quite and keeps chirping then spray onto the pulley and see if the noise goes away. This way you will know which part to change, unless money is not the object here for you then go ahead and replace all but I have learned that if something works, don't tamper with it then.

I replaced my powersteering pump and had a chirp for a while and it has gone away by itself. Maybe look at the powersteering pump also.

Thanks guys, i would have to get my brother to take my car to a mechanic to have it checked out ...... unfortunately im in St Helena in the middle of the south atlantic. Need someone good in durban to have it checked out by.

...... this is the noise im experiencing so which is most likely the crank case vent valve, after researching its accompanied by rough idle/ stalling, white smoke and excessive oil consumption.
BMW wants like R 5600 for the part (apparently it comes with the tappet cover)

Any good mechanics in the durban area that you guys know of i would like to replace the above and whilst at it also change the water pump (as it is prone to failure) and thermostat ?

:ty:

hi Guys...i am new to the club so please forgive me if i am posting incorrectly. my 325i e90 LCI started making this whinning sound somewhat similar to this link:
it doesnt do this when the engine is cold only after driving for like 35km thn it starts,it does it whilst i am driving but goes away for a while if i accelerate hard, when the car idles it also does it but comes and goes as and when i rev the motor...mechanic says the bleeder, gasket and tappet cover needs to be replaced and its about 8k? is this diagnose correct? i can add a video if need be..thanks
