E90 Waterpump failure

Looks like it has been 2 months of throwing money at my car ( Bmw 330i) . First the Fan went repaired that at R17k Warrantee covered R9k then a stone went through my condenser , the insurance covered this with a R4000 excess ...Then my front passenger door central locking went that I still need to fix .

Now finally after a few Pump Speed codes for the last year yesterday on the N1 just before Stellenbosch turnoff the dreaded yellow followed 30sec later by red overheating warning light came on . I was travelling at about 120Km/h ( obviously ) but I think a contributor to this was the outside temperature of 40 degrees . Stopped the car and waited for 20 min while accessing the hidden menu to see what the coolant temperature is, it was sitting at 120 degrees at first , waited until 106 then started the car and drove l slowly home monitoring the hidden menu temperature , traveling 100km/h the temperature fluctuated between 83 -93 degrees all the way home to Brackenfell . Well not taking any changes the car is parked to be fixed. DIY this time. I think I will order the parts from G Drive , pricing is fair .

Oh when I arrived home the expansion tank was a bit low due to water venting , I did a bleed procedure and the pump worked 100% tested it on Inpa at 90% and it fluctuated a bit like it won’t get speed.

Below is the codes on Inpa

DO NOT ORDER ANY PARTS FROM G-DRIVE!!! ITS BEEN TAKEN OVER BY SCAM ARTISTS AND THEY TAKE YOUR MONEY AND NEVER SEND THE PARTS! DO NOT ORDER FROM G-DRIVE!!!

Driving home on a failed water pump was a terrible idea, you may have buggered the motor for good. Next time you have the car towed.

i suspect you may have gotten away with this singular event as normally the electric pumps will hiccup a few times before they die totally... the codes you got were for 4 pump shut downs and 88 speed variances from requested targets.

i would suggest both a pump and thermostat replacement when doing this, as said before please do not buy from G-Drive!!! Search gumtree as there are a few resellers of the n52 waterpump...

Wow just checked the replies on time I was just about to Fast Pay G Drive for the parts ......

Gizmo & Kish I.O.U guys some Beers!!!

There is no signs of HGF no oil in water , rough running etc checked that on INPA and all cylinders run smooth .

The bit of water loss was due to venting I could see some water on the expansion tanks as i opened the bonnet .

I'm going to try Goldwagen or Diesel Electric . I'm a bit scared now to order things to be couriered to me . Seems like a lot of scamsters out there.

Worse case OEM from agents but with extra cost comes extra piece of mind at least.

On the driving home part I had my kids( 3 & 6 ) with me in car , not best place to be stuck and outside temperature was 40 degrees I also monitored the temperature on hidden display it never went past 93 degrees , ran AC to aid cooling as fan runs when AC is on. Temperature reacted normal all the way home as per load. As I stopped I plugged in INPA and the coolant pump shown that it is delivering coolant flow .. but will keep fingers cross

Thanks for the advice guys !!

Hi Blomhj,

I had that exacted problem on my way to Pretoria from Krugersdorp on the N14, same thing where my car suddenly did the car overheating thing in less then a minute going from perfect to disaster.

I also noticed that driving the car around 100km/h that the temp will stay and the car will not overheat. I ordered my parts from Goldwagen in Centurion at

Goldwagen / BMW
Waterpump - R4450 / R7132.13
Thermostat - R1100 / R1608.03

I did a DIY on this and took me around 4 hrs to complete the job, a lot of things you have to remove to get to it as well as figure out how to get it out and in. Novice DIY'er

Best part is when you have installed the waterpump and have to bleed it you just add the water into the radiator, then switch the car on and step the gas (don't start the car) and 10sec later it sounds like a pressure hose inside the engine bay, did laugh when I did this

PS: My waterpump did that 2 times, 3months apart and then it went to every time I would start the car for more then 10 minutes. Save for the waterpump as it is on the way out and will become more frequent.

Hi Lizzard

Seems like this is a common BMW issue reading through some forums across the water .

Tell me the Goldwagen pump , did they sell you a Pierburg pump , I believe this is the OEM pump ?

Looking at some Youtube DIY its seems like a tight fit and I have freakishly large hands. Neighbors will definitely complain I'm swearing again while working in garage.

Didn't see the name of the pump, sorry but I did compare it once the other pump was out as I am a bit sceptic on this. It was a match.

And yes, you will need a 2yr olds hands to get in certain places.
