e90 warning light... What is it?

Hi guys!

Start of December I had a warning light come that looks like the following:

A mech checked for me and said the light for rear brake pads is also on in the service menu, which is causing the one pictured above. We checked pads and I was assured that there is still a lot of life left in them and they really don't need replacing. I decided to leave warning light and get a second opinion this month. (December and Jan was very busy for me.)

Today I decided to remove the error after my car was a lift and I was told that the pads are fine.

This was my error before I reset it in the service menu:

Unfortanately the top one is not gone. It also has the red warning circle on the entire time I drive. Any suggestions as to what it can be? Dont want to pay R1000+ to have the car on a diagnostic machine for something silly.

AFAIK, that's the inspection service warning light.

Correct, that's the rear pads service warning light. If you managed to reset the service light, I guess that means your wear sensor is still in good nick as well

I reset the break pads through the service menu with no problems.

So I should book my car for an inspection? Is there no way to reset that light myself, it does not appear in the service menu.

The service light is there, but reset the brake indicator first as it is showing -1600km, after resetting this one then go to the car on jack icon and reset that one. Light should dissapear, below is a video showing the car on the jack in the service menu, hope this helps.

Thanks Lizzard. Im going to reset it, the car is going in for a oil service next week in any case, so will ask them to just do a quick look see for anything strange.

The first warning light with the car on a lift, is the bi-annual inspection reminder. The dealer normally does a safety inspection on the car, it does not mean that anything is necessarily wrong/broken and needs fixing.

Thanks for the input guys! Went down to the car quick... I reset the 'car on a lift' light in the service menu, but it still lights up red when I put my fob in the car.

Also, I think I might need to do something on those pads... The distance is not updating in the service menu... Could this be causing the car on a lift light?

I'd suggest you check the condition of your sensor, you might need to replace it.

Yes it is, I have read up just now as we speak regarding this. A lady here at work has the same problem the brake light shows "----" and the car on a jack keeps coming up although it shows a lot of kilometers left.

The info read that the brake sensor needs to be replaced with a new one and then reset again, this way it will make the 2 lights disappear. Hope this helps, I know bemow in pretoria west sell these sensors for R150 each and they are easy to install.

They say the reason why the brake indicator sensor shows "-----" is due to the 2nd stage not tripped on the actual sensor itself (didnt know this till 10min ago). There are 2 levels on these sensors and it trips the first one it shows the brakes need replacement, if we reset it after that then the "------" will show and we need to replace the sensor.

That there is a break sensor error buddy, have the sensors replaced, you will be able to reset the light once its done , check the connection aswell, you will have to remove some plastic to get access to them, while you at it get a small broom and remove any excess dirt that accumulated in the little black box.

The fact that there is no idiction of milage is and indication that there may be a problem with the senor, we have had several were the wires have been eaten off in the r/r wheel arch so if it doesn't want to reset it could be this. The vehicle on the lift could be several things, vehicle check as mentioned of some of the listed below picture from the owners manual. The car on the lift may be indicating that there is something electrical wrong on the vehicle. If you are close to Leo Haese Pretoria Hatfield, pop in and I will quickly read the key and see if it shows anything - and don't worry, I wont charge you to read the key, come have a cup of coffee if you like, only takes seconds to read the key. Hopefully I can give you some advice.

Need to replace sensor every time you need to reset counter or it does that and doesn't indicate mileage

Waiting on my car now. Key reading revealed its brake pads. After a visual inspection it seems the pads are indeed due.
