Hi guys,

Do you have these, or something similar?

I used the normal generic wrench and just put a cloth in between so that the teeth don't scratch the plastic.

Which generic wrench are you talking about? Those metal strap types?

Actually have one of these floating around somewhere, but looks like it will butcher more than loosen/tighten the plastic oil cap. Also there is very little space around the cap I think to use this in a more "gentle" manner.

Going to make some enquiries tomorrow to see what all is out there, surely the agents have something better and maybe some of the parts places have something that will do the trick minus the chance of damage.

My E46 320d (and some other E46 models) have the cap that use a 36mm socket to open.

Problem is that the socket part takes a lot of strain to open if your friendly local dealership decided to overtighten the housing...

Like I found out recently while trying to do an interim oil change and ended up cracking the housing socket. I managed to successfully Q-bond the part till my new cap arrives on Wednesday at the bargain price of only R450...

Here is a pic of the socket type cap: (Taken off the interwebz)

You can use one of those chain filter wrenches.. Sorry i dont have a pic now(but its about R40 from autozone)..I used it to open mine and its very easy and fits around the filter for easy opening, just use a thin cloth over the filter so you dont damage the housing.. You may just have to slide it in place, once you got it, just turn and it loosens then you open buy hand.. Same method for tightening

I live in midrand if you wanna borrow my wrench

The reason for the socket top filter cap is because the filter housing is sometimes too deep inside the engine bay so a normal chain or strap wrench does not always fit.

I also have a chain wrench which uses a quarter inch socket wrench to tighten.

Yep, problem is it looks a bit too tight space around this, so not necessarily that the chain and other grip type above won't work, just seems like it will easily scratch or damage surrounding areas. Going to see what I can find tomorrow...

Just use a cloth Mr. Foglar :dunno:

I say this from experience. The one I posted is the one I used with no damage.

Okay, so managed to find what I am looking for at Diesel Electric and just came back from getting one - had to order it from them since they don't normally have it in stock, R55, so not bad.

Well, will have to see how it performs when I do the next oil change, in 5 - 6 months! Fits properly but there is some play when you turn it, so will have to see... But then again, I don't think you want it to be too tight fitting.
