Morning guys,my waterpump has reached 92k mark,i hear this pumps failed anytime between 60k to 90k ,must i be worried since m on a 92k,and are there any of you guys who achieved 100k mark with this pumps without a problem?

If you do alot of long distance traveling, I suggest you switch it out after like 80k. If you use the car to zip around where you live, then its fine, you can run till failure (100k).

This pump issue can leave you stranded, so highway is out of the question on a high mileage pump!

I'm running two 3.0 N52's which both still have original pumps, at 125000 km and over 160000 km (2005 and 2007 manufacture), so it certainly isn't a given that they self-destruct before getting to 100k.

Does anyone perhaps know whether they usually will generate any fault codes before they actually fail?

I recall reading somewhere of someone who had picked up some codes that were interpreted as being an indication that the pump was on its way out.

Replaced mine last year on 215 000km, overheating message came out of the blue on my satnav screen E90 here, and pulled over. Restarted car and all fine, happened 2 months later again and the frequency became shorter. so replaced it.


Based on my experience the water pump doesnt just go, it gives you slight hinds that it is going by overheating. Then restart car is fine. So just look out for this. And listen to the fan also. If it is more on then usual or what you used to then it is a sign too.

Thanks Lizzard. The lack of a coolant temperature gauge in the E90 also makes it more difficult to notice any coolant flow problems prior to generating an actual overheating warning.

On 174000km and no issues yet, but I suppose if you really wana do preventative maintenance , do it at 150,000km

The pump on my wifes 323i went out at 98500km, lucky still within MP
My 335i water pump went at 143 000 cost a total of R10 000 with parts and labor.

Dont stress, if you can set aside R1000 a month and then buy a pump and thermostat and keep it aside you'll take the pressure off paying a large sum all at once.

Little info regarding that. When the pump start giving way the fan will start up sooner then usual, it will also be louder. The fan will also shut down later even after you switch the car off, not the norm to do this.

So just listen to the fan. When mine did it I had my gizmo (software cable thing) and could quickly check the water temps via diagnostics, was at 86°C. Usual as it can go up to 120°C even. The car will show an error the moment it goes 121°C and then the message will appear warning you of over heating. Just pull over, switch off the engine. Wait 5 min and switch it back on, restart car and see if warning shows again. If not, should do so in about 1min or less, then get to someone to see the temp in car. You can access it via the button on dash press thing. Need to look that up to show you guys.

Just remember that the temp can be between 80 and 120°C, that is normal.

If you Google "E90 hidden menus" you should find the procedure to view various extra vehicle parameters, including coolant temp, on the instrument cluster. The problem is that it's just enough of a hassle to pull it up that you really don't want to do it each time you start the car. It's certainly useful being able to check the temperature if you suspect a problem though.

I have just replaced the water pump in my 2005 E90 330i for the first time at 128000km. No warning lights, but a few weeks ago I noticed an unusual noise while in traffic (probably the cooling fan), so checked for fault codes when I got home. There was a "coolant pump speed deviation" fault (I can't remember the actual code number). Since then it has seemed OK, but given the age and mileage I decided rather to replace it.

Approx R5000 for a Pierburg pump from Goldwagen (same part as from the agents). The 3 aluminium mounting screws (which you cannot re-use) were included in the box. Quote from the agents was around R9600 for the pump.

The symptoms i experienced were:

The fan would come on especially in traffic and was unusally loud
would stay on for at least 2 minutes after turning the car off. I also got an error relating to the thermostat, though I cant recall the exact error, but I will check my saved diagnostic reports.

When I changed the water pump, I also changed the thermostat since they right next to each other. I personally think the agents want way too much for the job, and if you have some jack stands, a few tools and about 2 1/2 hours to spare it's a simple enough DIY. (about R4000.00 saving)

Agreed in general re doing the thermostat too, since you will have done most of the work to get there anyway. Mine was replaced only about 6000 km ago when it threw a fault code, and with the price of the pump I decided to hold out and wait until it was actually required. At that stage I thought the OEM pumps could only be sourced from the agents.

I still have the oem pump working fine in my e90. I suggest if it’s concerning you, change it. To give you peace of mind change the thermostat also.
