E90 Brake clips?

Hi Everyone

I recently sent my E90 320d LCI in to have the front brake pads changed out. Long story short, I ended up getting new discs as well, and now I have a clapping/rattle noise coming from my front pads, every time i drive over cats-eyes or very small bumps, which does not happen when I apply the brakes, it is silent when applying. I can only hear the noise from outside of the vehicle.

I see my brake clips are "loose", can any of you confirm is this is normal? Here is a vid:[video=vimeo]

I had already been back and forth 4 or 5 times to the place I had the pads done at and they have been unable to solve the problem.

Bud, thats not normal...the clip is not put in correctly...
It takes a bit of force, but once it snaps in place, it will have no movement:thumbs:

Thanks Riaad, I suspected so. Do you reckon I should try just reseat these clips myself, I shouldn't need to get new ones? just a matter of putting them in properly?

one of them is already new as the guys made me change it. its just as loose as the old one.

Yeah, just try and reseat them yourself... No need for new ones:thumbs:

Just remember, it will require abit of force:hammerhead:

 agreed do it yourself and then you will understand, What i would also recommend is putting copper slip on the brake pad edges where it touches the calipers to easy sliding back and forth. As Riaad mentions the clips take a fair bit of manipulating to get back in place - but not difficult.

It can also be that they got bent the wrong way and lost some of the "spring" ability.

Take them out and try putting it back in. If the problem persists you can try to bend them slightly so that they are seated in a stiffer manner once reinstalled.

Thanks for all the responses guys! I took the wheels off and removed the clips, the one side, where the "new" clip was, was extremely easy to take off and put back on, and it still moves about. the other side took a bit of effort to get back on and in place, however it still feels loose, I somehow think that the outer arms on the clip itself were maybe bent out of place and they are the cause of them being loose. I think I am going to get a set of new clips and try put them on next weekend. they definitely have too much play, and my friends car which is exactly the same model, has absolutely no play in the clips at all. He also said the clips went back on way too easy compared to his when he did his brakes.

If this doesnt solve your problem, have a look into caliper bushings - cheap to replace, I learnt this the hard way.

So anyway I cannot find these clips anywhere now, I have tried Europarts, Govenders garage, Diesel Electric and Goldwagen all in Pietermaritzburg.

Any of you have an idea where I can get these from?

The stealers are charging R250 each. Goldwagen doesn't have stock and they were around R90.

have you tried bending the clips back and reinstalling them to see if that does the trick?

Agreed.

Not a sure fire total fix for the long road. But at least something to help resolve a problem in the interim until parts arrive.

I'm going to try and reseat them again, those inner bits are not even sitting in the caliper... From the videos on youtube they should be. I did try reseat them last weekend and obviously there was no difference, maybe I was not doing it right either, I will go back and try again to see if there is any way to get these in solidly.

here is a pic of the "new" that the other guys put in, something just doesnt look right compared to the others i found on youtube. those inner bits are meant to be more "in" ? :hammerhead:

Step 1: take the clip out
Step 2: bend the arm more to the right (the way your top arrow is pointing)both at the top and bottom.
Step 3: reinstall, so you have firm contact here:

(I had the same rims on my 320d, and with a trained hand you can install/uninstall the clip with a bit of effort, without removing the wheel)

Just an update. After getting the tyres off again I bent those arms as suggested, I put it back in place as they do on the vids on youtube and it was indeed a bit of a struggle. However as soon as they slide into place, they are just as loose as they are in the vid. I can pull on that flat mettle bit and they jiggle around.

Im going to have to go to the stealers for this one, and perhaps even pay them to put it on properly, atleast this is what I hope is causing that clapping noise...

Makes me so mad that I sent this car in for a simple issue and it came back with this dumb clapping noise. Im actually properly angry.:rage::rage::rage:

I wont be taking it back to them thats for sure.

Dont rule out caliper bushings.

Trust me on this.

Yeah I also sometimes wonder if it could be something else! Anyway I found a place that specializes in brakes/steering & suspension, comes highly rated and at a reasonable rate. so I'm just going to take it to them one morning and get this all sorted. Im kind of running out of time afterhours due to work and studies etc... Thanks for all your guys inputs though, I really appreciate it! I will take your suggestion along with me for sure!

I wont be taking the car to the stealers, I know how they can be when it comes to troubleshooting, they tend to take a shotgun blast approach to it, and it comes at a hefty price, not gonna go down that road at all.

once I have managed to take it in, I will definitely revert back with what they find!
