Hi all,

Three problems I have to diagnose. I'm on 83 000 kms, and motorplan expires this year.

There are three symptoms I currently have on the car:

1) Raspy noise on cold starts, I suspect something like heat shielding or exhaust parts. Happens only on starts and when the car is cold, usually gone after the first km of driving.

2) Under some conditions when using clutch at low revs the car makes a stuttering noise, similar to marbles in an ice cream box. Any clues?

3) On general idle, there's that ticking noise which I somehow always associated with BMW engines in older models. I know the E30's in large engine sizes used to make the same ticking noise.

I would like to take the car in for a good checkup now, and for a last check before going out of MP, so would want these things sorted.

If any of you can tell me what I need to tell the dealer in order to have this sorted ASAP it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Point 3 would be the hydraulic lifters is my guess.. did it on my car and they replaced them.. problem solved.

Raspy sound could be a small hole in your exhaust, possibly on one of the weld seams. As it heats up, it expands and seals up the hole.

pull in to your local dealership after making a booking frantically. then complain like you never have complaint in your life. Tell them clutch is slipping, rasping noises, etc etc. They must please fix the car.

Then go collect your car and enjoy it out of MP.

The ticking noise could also be wastegate rattle, a known issue on the N54. Mine has wastegate rattle. Can be rectified with software, not sure how BMW themselves fix it - or if they'll even admit to it.
Or, it could be hidraulic lifters....

1) Could be waistegate rattle.
3) Is most probably your injectors clicking. They are relatively loud. Lift your hood and listen to the noise under the engine cover and identify if this is the clicking sound you are hearing. If so its normal.
