E90 330i Gearbox issues

Hi

My Brother has an 2005 E90 330i, with an Auto Gearbox and about 3 days ago the box acted up and went into Limp mode and just managed to get home.

The car went to a private mechanic, as its off motorplan, and he says the box is stuffed... The mechanic is really good so we dont doubt him.
But the thing is Umhlali BMW supposedly changed the gearbox just over a year ago when it was under m/plan.

Isnt it strange that the box packed up so quick ?
What can be done ? Or does anyone have an idea of how to sort this out, and the costs involved ?

My brother tends to only drive in D/S mode, could this factor cause the gearbox to have such a poor life span ?

Thanks Everyone

Hi

I may be mistaken, but any parts changed under motorplan carry a 2 year warrantly.
Thus it was changed just over a year ago the warranty should still be valid, otherwose CPA is your friend:rollsmile:

BMW replace them only with rebuilt boxes. Driving style does influence gearbox life a lot. All BMW parts should be guaranteed for 2 years, including the gearbox if they replaced it.

Goodluck bud...my 325Ci had the same issue. The auto gearbox packed up and my car was out of motorplan. I ended up re-doing the gearbox at a very reputable gearbox specialist (cost quite a bit). The box was great after that (had i was given a full 1 year warranty) 3 months after that it packed up again. Took it back, after 2 new gearboxes and CPU they dropped in and 3 weeks of not having the car, its back and feels great again.

Bit scary as now you feel that you might not know if it will happen again or not. Never getting an auto again, though the car is amazing!

Do you know if you have a GM box in that car, or the ZF (BMW fitted both to that car)

I have very good news. Like I said, the gear box was changed about a year or so ago... Our mech who works at BMW took the car into work and found that it had a ZF g/box and he then got the details of when the box was fitted and he got the relevant motivation for them to fit a new ZF g/box with all costs covered by BMW , about R35 000.

So from the time I wrote the initial post the car has been worked on by our Mech and now the car returned home today with the new box.

I must acknowledge our mechanic, he has done a sterling job, following through everything the entire way. He's a really good man, with a passion for cars, esp BMW's . I can recommend him to anyone from Durban should they need help with their BMW.

Thanks everyone, please pm me if you need our mechanics details.
