when i took the car to bmw for a software update for the sat nav they also told me that the new version might mess up the actual player and it is not covered by them if it breaks as no motorplan.

They advised to just leave it alone.

I just don't understand why they try and make a point of it that it is not worth doing the software update and totally put you off. Why aren't they just eager to help someone with the services they offer?

I have noticed that some techies do not even understand what such an update does and why it is needed.

Don't forget that even at such good dealerships as SMG sometimes some simple minds do their duty

So does this mean that any older model(E46 or even e36) bmw could possibly get a software update for their car... Cos at some stage bmw had software updates for those cars when they were current models...
