I just don't understand why they try and make a point of it that it is not worth doing the software update and totally put you off. Why aren't they just eager to help someone with the services they offer?

Yip and I have had my share with a workshop Foreman at SMG who I considder realy realy stupid. This idot even phoned me at home and threatening me. So needles to say I will never go back there as long as that guy works there. I will not trust him with my car or my life. I am not allowed to mention his name on this site advised by adminastrators, but its on Facebook and a few other sites and ofcourse by word of mouth.

:sorry:

I phoned this same branch some months back enquiring about software update for my car and got the same story, probably the same guy too! But in some cases it is true - my car was last serviced in Jan 2012 and they did update the software, all of a sudden the doors would not auto unlock when taking the keyfob out if you locked the car before driving off. This is a setting that was changed with the software and because the ECU is the older spec, it does not show this option on the cluster like it does on the newer ECU or LCI models. So the work around is to let the car lock the doors when you get moving, or push the lock down manually. Just an example of something minor, but I suppose other things could be affected and more serious issues etc.

if something goes wrong why can't they just re-flash the software? or restore or something? Doesn't it work in a similar way as flashing a cellphone with a rom? IF you fail or flash the wrong software, you can just reflash everything, it does not do physical damage to the hardware...

Normally you are right but the BMW system doesn't allow that!
Promotec can do that..... BMW Dealers can't

Ja just one Foreman that think he is the cream and the boss. But he is not my boss. Realy realy sad that one person can pull a dealership down.

Just came back from SMG Cape Town
Had a word with Roy and Walied and complained about the wrong advice customers were given about software updates.

I made it clear that for OUR purpose the software update is clearly beneficial and that in future I would like customers sent to SMG not to be confused with different statements.

So the guys at the service desk are Roy or Walied whom you should talk to and no one else

Thanks Rolf! Yep, I agree with them cautioning, but definitely should not do so in the confusing way as mentioned above. So it's great that you spoke to them regarding this! Before I came to you with the ECU and software issue, I had spoken to them to find out if they could update the software to see if this would help with the issues, and got this nonsense from them, and the more I was trying to explain and disagree with what he was saying the more he insisted and eventually I just got annoyed with the waste of time!

Now another question with regards to software updates - can they update just the software for the engine management (ECU), or is it an all in one for the entire system, if that makes sense?

Philip there are dependancies.... so the answer is NO --> all or nothing

BUT ... I know what you want to stress.... this needs to be set in INPA again and I bet you the guy didn't know how to do it

.... may I ask why?

because its not my car and the owner got too paranoid due to the foreman convincing him not to do it as the 'risks' are too great... :/
