An update is probably long overdue, so here goes:
Every E90 owner will know how terrible the stock sound is, so an upgrade was inevitable.
I opted to DIY the whole process as it would work out cheaper.
I started by upgrading the front door speakers first to get an idea of how “big” I would have to go to get decent sound. This was also the cheapest upgrade.
I opted for 4” Hertz DCX100.3 Coaxials. Mounting rings were cut out of steel seeing as the Hertz speakers require 4 holes and the OEM speakers have 3.
To replace the front 2 speakers, fit the mounting rings, apply sound deadening and fit everything back in the car took about 1.5hours max and it is worth every second.
The coaxials do bring out sharper (sometimes more harsh) sounds. This is apparently due to the OEM headunit having a preset equalizer designed to make stock speakers sound better than they are. I have heard this can be cancelled out by means of programming, but have not done enough homework to find out where, how etc.
Overall I am happy with the improvement. Sound quality is miles better, the fit looks factory (speaker mesh etc. all fits) and the speaker provides a wider range than stock.
Next step will be to upgrade the underseat bass drivers and connect a 4-channel amp to the bass drivers and coaxials.
