e90 330d issues

The //M3 needs some down time, so I figured, get a 320d or better yet 330d since they are going for good prices.
I've now settled on buying a 330d, with round about 140k-160k , a daily runner, so I wanna know what to look out for, so please guys, 330d owners give me some advice.thanx

Oh gosh, how did I forget about you after having one of the fastest 330d around, so you will be tagging along when the mods start:coolShake:

Both the E46 and E90 diesels are awesome, with regards to common issues the crank damper pulley is a common failure point and can fail from 120 000km onwards, once replaced you have peace of mind. The E46 has the regular suspension issues that are the same as the petrol models with the E90 that has a more robust suspension. Appart from that consumption will be anything from 5.0l/100km to 9.5l/100km depending on if its auto or manual and if its modified or not. Modded diesels get better consumption lol. If you looking at a high mile auto i would suggest a gearbox service and downpipe as the first starting point because the cats aren't doing you any favours. If you get a pre lci E90 or Lci E46 you would also want to do the oil breather filter and egr delete and clean. The E46 has issues with eating swirl flaps so if you get one a swirl flap delete kit should be on the cards.its like R500 to R800 and a few hours labour. The E90 diffs have higher failure rates than the E46 so i would also suggest a diff oil change on those. Appart from that service it regularly and let it warmup before flooring and cool down before switching off and she will treat you well

Awesome choice Xack, once you open the flood gates on those motors there's no turning back. I've done about 100000km in just over 2 years with mine.

Many more and much faster and powerful 330d's around Earl. You won't go wrong, just make sure you do a proper background check. I.e: service history, accident history etc.

Yeah but I jus remember yours as one the first super diesels, i'll call on you when making my final decision jus to make sure, exciting times ahead.

the landie and bmw are two different vehicles,one is a sedan,the other a suv.both bring a big smile to my face,he bmw you can be a hooligan in and the other a laid back ,peaceful drive.its 2 cars I will never get rid of

while i have no e46 or e90 i can guarantee that bmw diesels are one of the most reliable tractors made,

apparently my e39 at 265k km is young, and motor specific parts iv replaced due to failure are , watch this list

my gbox did go at like 260ish racing an s2000...and wining...

The only guy I know of that had terrible luck with a Diesel is Spannie win his 330d. And Tjef has an issue with his 530d.

Point is, out of all the diesel guys here, there are/were two problem children. And don't exclude the 320d either, I have one and I'm perfectly happy with its performance as a daily. In fact, it hurts my M from a standing start, although it's not stock anymore.

I keep telling everyone, I'd much rather sell the M than I would my diesel...

Lots of good comments made here. On the E90s the egr thermostat as well as engine thermostat fail at around 7years of age. So I'd recommend having them both changed. It improves fuel consumption and reduces engine wear.

If you want big power get an LCI and speak to Karsh and Rayzor. Their lcis are ballistic!

You can fit the n54 intercooler which is a straight oem swap and makes a for a nice mod overall.

Run some LM injector cleaner every now and then and you're sorted.

I've only had good experiences with bmw diesels. Had 4 320ds and going onto my 3rd 330d hopefully soon. I just can't get enough of them. They are all still happily running with their new owners.

If you're going for an E90, the South African 2005-2007 models have been de-tuned to 160KW and 480Nm. They changed it to 170KW and 500Nm in late 2007 so get a 2008 or newer model just to be sure. (Unless of course you're gonna get it tuned anyway, then it's a moot point!)
