E90 330D - Consumption (New to BMW)

I have learned from my E46 330i to just live with it. You want power then it is there, and what I have heard YOU definitely bought the right car for fuel consumption and power. Tweaking the car will just make the monster come out of it and will deliver some performance just dreamed about (in our case that is, some people on this forum has gone nuts and made the 330d a beast nevermind a monster) :biglol:

Thank you. Yes, I am 100% happy to live with the consumption, as long as it is valid, and not because of a dirty sensor, filter or some other issue.

Just take in consideration to make you feel beter, go for a drive on the highway at a constant speed for about say 20km and then see what see sits at, that will indicate immediately if you have a dirty anything or not.

That short route is killing you, I average 16km for my 11L, if I do less then that you would think I drive a petrol tanker :crazylaugh:

Congrats on the buy, you will not regret it at all. Especially when you start learning the family on this forum, love them, and our Gauteng guru Gert for all those little tweaks. Please check the airfilter as well. Mine started behaving like that only to find filter was filthy and BMW had not bothered to change it. After changing it went back to normal 8l per 100 in traffic.....though averaging 9 at the moment cause of heavy foot...lol

Just checked. Brand new filter.

I have also received the following advice:
- Get Wynns Injector cleaner
- Open the car up for a while

Will try that next.

There are two problems here - the distance that you are travelling to work and back is too short, so the engine is mostly driving at speeds where it's not going to be very economical, then the more serious problem is the fact that the engine is most likely not even getting up to proper operating temperature. This is not good in general, but especially not ideal for a diesel! My advice, as strange as it may sound, find a longer route to work, then take the car for a drive (15 min at least) on the way home. Or if you are so close to work, leave the car at home and use those legs! LOL

Jokes aside, I was in the same boat years ago, and if it wasn't for the fact that I didn't really have secure daily parking where I stayed I would have just walked to and from work - it was probably quicker due to the traffic. Except rainy days! But my situation forced me to drive the car, so I would just take a slightly longer route so that I was happy that the car was able to get a decent run, and then at the end of the day I would take the car for a bit of a drive before going home. This also helps the battery.

Your car is not getting up to operating temperature in that time. PLus being a vehicle out of MP i would look at going over the car from a service and maintenance perspective. If the oil and filter was changed recently, consider other items like fuel filter, boost leaks, egr clean, dirty sensors.

Give it a full service in any case. Replace ALL filters.

This should be common practice when buying a second hand car. You do not know when last the fuel filters etc were changed, and BMW dealers are infamous for taking shortcuts like that.

I tried going for a "loop" drive this morning. It does appear to improve things. Now to do the math of better consumption vs. longer distance. It never ends.

Walking is not really an option, as I drop off the kids in the morning.

Hi Interesting topic as my figures and traveling distance are very similar on my LCI 330D.


I drive 3.6Km's a day to work and back and average around 9 l/100. (terrible for the car as it never gets up to operating temp on my OBDlink)

As soon as I get on any highway, for any out of the norm trip, it drops to around 5 - 6 l/100. (depends how heavy my foot is and what's in the review mirror)

Kill the cats. I have 330i only used for spirited driving. Consumption at 12.6l. No other way to drie these cars. Good runs though. 100km return trips

if I reset mine after filling up then its crazy figures around the suburbs,but work and back - 120km round trip a day get between 5.7 and 6.7 per hundred and that's with taking it up to 160 plus every so often,get roughly about 900km on a tank

its fun when you play with lumina's on the highway,sitting behind them at 160 plus and getting 7/100km and smiling while,he is stressing where the next garage is:biglol:
