Hi Guys

So the inevitable eventually happened with my car. Valve stem seals seem to have gave in. I noticed if I stop for a while with car idling, a puff of smoke is visible on my rear view mirror. The car currently has 140k km on it. I got in touch with Ross Duncan who quoted me approx. 8k, Tune tech said it cud be anything between 16-23k (jaw dropped after hearing this), also got in touch with a gentleman by the name of Omesh in Midrand who quoted me 6.5k. Has anyone had to deal with a similar issue and who around Gauteng sorted you out and at what amount? Thanks.

My 7er is going for valve stem seals in the next couple of weeks. Just over R8k from BMW. I think they have special tools which allow them to do the job in a fraction of the time it would take an indi to do it. Get in touch with Silas at Cedar Isle Auto for a quote.

I was quoted around 8k as well by SMG BMW dealer here in Durban, to do the valve stem seals as well as some plastic guides (was told that once the top is off its best to replace the part) BMW has a special tool which allows them to replace the seals without removing the head.
My cars an E46 318 N42 engine ( i think its almost the same as your cars N46? engine)

I spent some on You Tube a while back and stumbled onto how they do it, they have a "tool" that allows them to continuously pump air into the combustion chamber, holding the valve in place whilst they change the seal.

Pretty nifty I thought, was in USA and therefore on 7 series V8 iirc, not too many 4 pots that side.

Well its been a while and the e46 still no smoke. All I can say is go to the dealership and speak to the workshop foreman and ask him for a better price niceley :tiptoe:

Had the E46 318i at ZF Cape Town for its 2nd 200 000km gearbox oil change and filter R3400. Great service and help from Willem at ZF.

Hi

I got mine done earlier this year, I have a 120i. I have no problems since.

Was done by a Mechanic, Arvind in the Rooihuiskraal area in Centurion for R7500.

PM me for the number.

before you go spend money on the stem seals, replace the oil separator. The part costs around R500 but you have to remove the intake to reach it. Mine had thick white smoke and oil coming out the exhaust.
