Only thing you have to worry about is Valve stem seals at around 140,000km and there are a few cases of the Valve tronic motor going wonky , other than that no Real Issues!

Are they expensive to fix?

Leo Haese BMW (John Forum Member) had a special at R7900, and independent mechs charge between R3000 - R12000
Note the valve seals are only a major issue if left unattended for too long, the car will still drive normally , smoke on pull off resulting in over usage of engine oil
once the seals gave in and started smoking My Brother drove his 320i for 7000km including a trip to Durban and Back with no issu other than topping up oil every 1000km

Not too sure on valve tronic motor though.

The seller does not want to drop his price which is over the insurable retail value so we will now not be taking this one but will keep an eye out for another one.

resell on the 320i isnt that great either and dealers tend to offer very low for them. go for the 325i rather

There's plenty of E90 320i's out there with quite a few selling below retail.
If you really want one , youl find one.

Valvetronic motor is the only real issue I had, cost me R10k.

Good idea to get an aftermarket warranty to manage the risk
