E90 320d vs F30 320d

I never owned a diesel car. But I would go with the E90 320D manual.

They Manual box does handle torque a lot better.

The E90 has the added advantage of having some history behind it, so there’s more aftermarket spares available.

Actually an auto box suits the low revving characteristics of a diesel much better. A manual in town will have you changing gear alot. Open road is fine though because you never need to change gear

+1 :coolShake: a diesel and auto are the perfect match. A diesel with a manual gearbox could be a tad annoying. They normally have the shortest 1st gear imaginable as well.

Take it from someone who had one in manual. Buy the auto, its a much better gearbox for the motor, especially in town.

I also have never been a fan of auto until I owned One now I don't understand why some one would even buy manual.

Hi

I bought my e90 320d (pre-lci) on 108,000km and it's sitting on 180k km atm. Car really is a pleasure to drive, and pulls strong (I would assume the LCI is even better).

Things I've had to replace are the thermostat (DIY), the original battery (was 9 years old) and waterpump (aftermarket warranty paid most of this) and recently, like some others here have mentioned, the vibration damper pulley.
I agree with others that the auto just makes so much sense on these cars (mine’s an auto).

One last thing, and it’s really a pleasant surprise, is that normal oil services on these things are really cheap. I take it SMG in century city, and most of the time the bill is around R900.00 (I prefer to go to the agents for service record etc). Before I bought the car I though maintenance would be expensive, but it’s really not.
All in all, it’s a great car and I’ve never once regretted my decision to purchase.

Hope this helps

You will not regret!! I have a e91 pre lci 320d with 2023xx km and it's been the most pleasurable driving and ownership experience. Yes it will use the rear tyres up. In my 4 years I've replaced the tears twice. Both times I got 50k+ km on each set though so no complains. Never had issues with gearbox or turbo. Did the vibration pulley and water bottle and regular services with good oil. Driving a diesel is pleasurable. General care to let the car cool after been driven hard and also to not hammer the car on a cold start it will last you forever!
Go for it!

My advice would be to test drive an auto and manual properly to see which one you prefer.

Personally, after driving manual vehicles for the last 11 years, I find the auto box in my 330d more of hindrance than anything else. Its irritatingly ponderous nature when a tight gap in traffic is spotted and erratic over eager kick down when all I want is abit more power can be bothersome. Although this criticism can be levelled at autos in general......

If you are an "auto" person, it would probably be fine as it is a good box. But if you enjoy exploiting the motor through the gearbox and being in control of the drivetrain at all times, then the manual would be the way to go, be it Petrol or Diesel.

I too went for the auto after reading up on how a diesel engine is better suited to the auto, etc. Ended up feeling disappointed, as I believe it takes some of the shine off a brilliant motor....

Reading up here, I have to giggle to myself......

I too drive a diesel at the moment and have decided to continue with the diesel trend.

Moving from an Isuzu to the E90 320D.

Many things do ring true.......

Short first gears - check.
Many quick shifts - check.

If I could, I would grab an auto myself......sadly I don't have that luxury at the moment, but in the future I would make that change.

I have the pleasure of currently owning a E90 320d as well as a my company car being the F30 320d.
The interior of the F30 is a lot better than the E90 but I seriously miss driving my E90 cause I feel more in control of it.
I also feel the look of the E90 is a lot better compared to the F30.

When it comes to the E90, i got a lot less kilos per tank than the F30, this being because the E90 auto was driven in constant traffic and i used to average around 680 kilos per tank. Now the F30 i get around 900 kilos per tank and this is driving in free flowing traffic on the N14.

My E90 did cost me a bit of money when she broke down, and as some of you remember there was a lot of parts replaced in an attempt to find out why it broke. To this day i still dont know what was the problem.

All things considered, i will not sell my E90, love that car to bits

I have a 2006 pre face 320D E90 manual that has 231000km on it and new 320d f30
only big thing i have done is the first turbo at 210000km and is could be repaired, so i just replaced the core.
Otherwise from that no issues it has been decatted, DTS Chip and pedal response with a huge ass intercooler. i love the E90 more then the F30.

Well i have not dyno the car but the turbo lag is gone and car is way more responsive. it is kind of bolt on, alot of modifications must be done to the intercooler pipes. i am still looking for someone that makes custom intercooler pipes. But my modified ones are still working for now.
