E90 320d Fuel power loss

Hi guys,

While driving back from holidays yesterday I encountered a problem with my cars power delivery. This is my first diesel vehicle so I don't even know where to start, but Ill provide some details I wrote down when it happened and maybe someone else experienced the same problem.

1. I lost all power while trying to accelerate, I initially thought the turbo was giving problems but when I pulled off the road the rev counter kept bobbing between 1000 and 1500 rpm.

2. Even though I was flooring the accelerator at 40 kph (the fastest I could go in 3rd), the l/km did not move past 5-7 l/km, thus confirming it was not the turbo, and maybe something with the fuel delivery.

3. I filled up about 120 km before this.

4. The car had an oil service 500km before this, and I asked for shell helix ultra 5w40. Since I had the vehicle (about 5000km) I only filled up with 50ppm.

5. The problem persisted for about 25min, and didnt happen again all the way from Colesberg to Gauteng.

6. It's a 2005 320d with 220000km on the clock.

My suspicion is that there is some dirt in the fuel tank, thus blocking the flow, but I am not experienced enough to know that for a fact. What are the obvious things I could check before I take it to a garage.

Thank you!

Sounds like injectors on their way out causing a misfire :bangdesk:

You maybe have filled some contaminated diesel. Try re priming the system for this.

Or there could be a vacuum leak.

Hi,
Sounds like water contaminated fuel.
I suggest having the fuel filter changed as a precaution if it ruptured internally allowing dirt or water through to the high pressure pump and injectors.

+1 easy way to fix this just get some NF Diesel Boost will get rid of the water in the system.

Good stuff, I will try that first.

Just an update. I bought the NF Diesel Boost, and have not experienced the problem again in the last 1500km. So seems like it was some dirty diesel.
