Nice write up, I still have a bit to read(wifey is nagging me to switch off the lights).

For your washer nozzle problem, buy windshield washer fluid and you won't get build up around the nozzle. Any brand does the job, all our cars has water and a high dosage of that stuff, no problems.

Lol, Thanks Dewald,

Apologies to the mrs on my behalf. I haven't had any issue since I initially unblocked it, I also make a point to use it every once in a blue moon, as regular use keeps the dirt out.

The issue I have now is that the rear wiper motor might be on its way out, so I'm considering doing a rear wiper delete??

Just to give it a cleaner look ?

:roflol::smilebounce:

back to the backdates...

So as soon as I got the the car, I started shopping for parts, and before long, I was known as the guy in the office with 3 steering wheels but 1 car.

The wife likes to tease me about this, but I digress.

I started looking for all the Mperformance and Msport bits that I wanted, to make the car more personal, and add my own secret sauce to, and after phoning scrapyards and breakers in literally all 9 provinces I slowly started to find what I wanted, and where I couldn't get what I wanted, I would sometimes find what I need.

With sideskirts from JHB, bumpers from KZN, radio and harness from PTA, 19" BBS's and paint from the Eastern Cape, and all manner of odds n sods from CPT, this was quickly turning into a project of national pride! :bravo:

Either that, or a mini "Pitbull" reference

:roflol:

Long story short,

Thanks to DannyBoyOPC for sorting me out with the sideskirts, very helpful and overall a great chap to deal with.

and Subloaded for helping me ship the rear bumper from Durban, during this whole exchange discovered we both had N52's albeit his was in an mint AWIII E92 325i Msport with 313's, and just started chatting, and shooting the sh*t since, one of the unintended or often overlooked benefits of the car community, and car culture in general, is that you befriend many people along the way by simple virtue of what you have in common

... and then he bought a diesel 5 series... traitor @Subloaded :roflol:

Needed quite a bit of work, but it thought it was a good time to pick up a spray gun and see what happens :hammerhead:

Went away on a boys weekend away, and one of the guys snapped this pic. probably the last pic I have of the car, the way the body left the factory.

As much as I like the sporty stuff, I like the clean and classy too. You can't exactly wear a running shoe to a wedding or a funeral.

No ragrets! :roflol:

Every time I see a lci E92 with 313s though :blueCry:

Car is coming along nicely man. The 2 door (3 door?) makes it 'worth' the mods coz it'll always be different to the more common models with rear doors.

Looking forward to the updates

Thanks Kyle,

She's getting there, it might be moving slowly, but moving it is :cartel:

Anyway,

Up to this point in life I had never used a spray gun, and never sprayed anything big that would require the finish and consistency of a BMW, I had always seen spraying as if it was second nature, but prep work just frustrates me.

I have stated numerous time ! I will buy a car with, mechanical, electrical, and interior problems, just please don't ask me to do bodywork :blueCry: :rage:

Having only used spraycans in the past, it was just too annoying and time consuming, when you spend at least an hour cleaning, taping and prepping a piece, just for a run to appear in the color, and you have to start all over again, or something stupid to happen like the masking tape peeling the paint, a small gust wind causing over-spray, or a bug making a home in my freshly lacquered finished product. :hammerhead:

Luckily for me, that was in the past, and now I had an Ace in the hole...

Enter, THE BROTHER IN LAW :bravo::smilebounce::praise::tiptoe:

Those in CT might know about him, he's been with me to a few of the Fanatics events, but is better known for his customizing of just about everything, lights, bays, rims, bikes, intakes, valve covers, you name it... he is a Pinstripe, Candy, burnout and VW obsessed individual, but I'm slowly bringing him over to the dark side of his bigger German cousin :cartel:

He had some time off, and I had some time free, and just like that the stars aligned. A friend of my father had a paint shop in PE, and he manged to send me a few litres at a giveaway cost as a favor.

The cheapest I found BMW Sapphire Black Metallic 475 in CT was R1300 per litre!!:hammerhead:

I nearly sold the bumper to look for a black one when I heard that.

Paint prices aside, I told the B-I-L that I was there to learn, not hold him back, and so we cracked on. Turns out its quite simple when things go to plan, there's a lot more patience, skill and attention to detail going into it than I initially anticipated, and some techniques for when things go wrong that just come with time.

It starts off simple enough, step 1: flat down the entire surface, and smooth out any scratches, gouges, and dents.

step 2: fill all the scratches and dents

step 3: wipe down, and apply primer

Rear bumper primer pt2

This will be the abridged version

Step 4: fix, fill and flat and imperfections.

step 5: scuff and wipe down the paint surface

step 6: Apply color

Step 7: apply clearcoat, and hide your erection.

I never realized how much flake was actually in the stock black "BSM 475" paint until I saw it in the wet and in the flesh !

... something tells me I need paint correction :fencelook:

The diffuser had a bit of a rough life up to this point, but I was fixated on bringing it back to life and doing something different, as the "Tupperware-lid-grey" just wasn't doing it for.

At first my thoughts were to color match it to the car and have the car even more "murdered-out"

I was convinced otherwise and ended up mixing a kick ass anthracite out of some BMW Titan Silver Metallic and my BSM.

But I might still go that route if I start getting idle hands or start wanting something new/different.

as for the 95% sanding and 5% other...

I'm slowly figuring that out :roflol:

Thankfully the novelty hasn't worn off yet.

As I may or may not have mentioned, we tackled the side skirts in parallel with the rear bumper.

Thankfully they were a lot simpler, and significantly more manageable compared to the bumper with its nooks, crannies, and wraparound edges.

The rigidity and lightweight were also welcomed changes, as it just made life (read as sanding/prep) easier

:=):

first up was to give them a decent wipe down to assess any issues that would need to be addressed. After that, what can I say, Sand - Fill - Spray - repeat

As recieved

ss1_4124146151.jpg

Starting with the washdown and flatting

ss2_8023004147.jpg

Filling the scratches and blending all the curves

ss3_798734214.jpg

Adding the first coat of primer to highlight and low or high spots before color.

So at this point we ended up having to stop for the day, the reason escapes me, but I'm sure it was legitimate, and probably had something to do with our wives, who thankfully entertain all our car crap, despite car parts littering the living room and others :ty::blowheart:

Anyway, the night on, we kicked back, enjoyed some time with the family and picked up again first thing in the morning, to start putting down the color and the clear

These were the only two pics I had, as by this point I had taken so many of all the stages and inbetweens, not to mention a few videos, that I was a little over it :fencelook::sorry:

But it gives an idea as to what the end result was
